Classic Prep

It never fails...the day after my J. Crew catalog arrives in the mail, I have the overwhelming urge simultaneously wear all my bright-colored pieces at the same time.  Does this happen to anyone else?  This outfit was my compromise - still embracing fun colors (teal, hot pink + yellow) and mixing classic preppy pieces, but without going overboard.  I originally planned to wear my hair up in a bun to finish the look, but haven't quite figured out how to do it with this shorter length yet - would love to hear suggestions if you have them!

What I'm wearing:
J. Crew blouse (similar), H&M sweater (similar here or here), Levi's jeans (on sale here), ALDO pumps (on sale here), c/o Angela & Roi bag (here), c/o Christina M. Boutique necklace (here), Michael Kors watch (similar)

I absolutely flipping adore that blouse/sweater combo. Cable knits are my favorite thing about fall! Add stripes and I'm done for ;) Great look!

separate your hair into a top and bottom section. Tease the top section and smooth the hair over the tease so it's smooth and you can't see the tease. Take the underneath section and make your bun as close to the top as you can. secure the top down with bobby pins so it looks like it is all together, bun and tease. It will be a bun with some height and oomph. There's a great tutorial by one of the Glam Fairies on youtube but I don't have the link.
I love the green sweater!

I just spent a few minutes browsing your blog and I'm in love. You have such an eye for putting together beautifully feminine looks with a modern, trendy twist. And that's very inspiring for me as I'm getting older and want to explore more "mature" fashion. I'm also a stay at home mom too, so that's inspiring as well! :)

I was brought to your blog by a retweet on twitter for your post yesterday and I'm glad I clicked through. You have an amazing blog and I can't wait to read more of it! Have a great weekend!

Toni

This look is so quintessentially J. Crew and I LOVE it!!! And you made it look totally do-able for every day wear which is perfect!

The colors are just such a great mix in this outfit! I really like the striped shirt peeking out from that sweater, and the color of the sweater is such a beautiful, happy color.

Haha! I know what you mean. Our first J Crew store had its grand opening yesterday in ABQ and the next day I put together an outfit that was all color!

By the way. I found your blog through Gal Meets Glam and I love it! I did a post on what is it about J Crew that looks soooo good that we can copy elsewhere. I just went to Forever 21 yesterday and it was a look-a-like J Crew factory!

Pinned this! I love it! The sweater is gorgeous!

Perfectly classic! xo.

Very cute, Kimberly! And I love that your lip color doesn't exactly match your shoes. Not sure if that was on purpose...but I like that it's not too matchy/matchy!

The perfect amount of color! Love your shoes! And i found bobby pins were my best friend when I had short hair.. they really help with the updos!

I think your hair is still long enough for a bun. Maybe not a top knot, but a low bun.

I am in love with this outfit. I need to steal it to wear it to Thankgiving! I love the unexpected pup of awesome on your feet!

Ohhh, I love the sweater, blouse, and necklace together! I have a very old v-neck sweater in that color from H&M that I just dug out and was wondering what to pair with it - also have a navy striped button-down and a gold link necklace (that I have yet to wear, for some reason!) I've totally been inspired, and I'm looking forward to wearing the outfit next week!

PS - Love the background of these photos. Fall in NY is pretty great (minus the wind, LOL)!

In a way I am glad that we don't have a free access to J Crew everything over here - otherwise I'd be in trouble. Absolutely adore the outfit and the colours. The pumps and bag are gorgeous! x

I love your blog and style. I too have hair your length and tried this last night. Surprizingly, I think you can keep it as a bun also.

Nice outfit, I'm too shy to war so many colours at once although it looks awesome...don't know how to explain but spanish women have a way to put their hair up all the time...

Love the bright colors!
Have you tried the sock bun? It worked pretty well on my hair when it was shorter. As long as you use a few Bobby pins along the bottom you should even be able to do a top knot. :)

classic prep indeed! I just adore those hot pink shoes everytime you wear them. Beautiful photos! I hope you have a great weekend! xx

Lovely fall backdrop and loving the classic look with a mix of fun colors.
Ok here are some name of tools to make a bun and google it:
-Magic hair bun maker
-Donut hair bun maker

Hope that helped?

The arrival of the J Crew catalog is always dangerous :) I love the stripes peeking out from under your sweater!

Thanks so much for this post! It's great to see just how chic you can look without having to lay out tons of money. I've had my eye on that H&M sweater and will have to buy it now after seeing how stylishly it plays out. The striped blouse and necklace pull it all together beautifully. Great job!
