Fully Vested

Since I naturally gravitate towards more tailored pieces, I tend to have a difficult time in the warmer months putting outfits together that are both comfortable & polished.  So, this denim vest has become my new favorite layering piece because it adds just the right amount of structure that I crave with summer basics, but I can still wear it on 80-degree days without getting overheated.  And how amazing is this quilted bag?  I've always said that I'll never own a Chanel (as beautiful as they are, I could never spend that much) but this one has that same classic style and is just over $30!

What I'm wearing:
J. Crew top (on sale here), Thread & Supply vest c/o TJ Maxx (similar here or here), LOFT skirt (similar here or here), MRKT wedges (similar here or here), c/o T&J Designs necklace (here) & cuff (similar), c/o QuestHaven Fashions bag (on sale here), Ray-Ban wayfarers (similar)

Beat The Heat

As June quickly approaches, I've started to revamp my beauty routine and incorporate the products that will protect my skin from the sun + help my makeup stay put, in spite of the heat.  Some of these are new discoveries and some are old stand-bys, but all are items I have been impressed with & now swear by.  Here are my top 10 picks for looking flawless even when it's sweltering:

1) CeraVe Face Lotion Sunscreen SPF50 - The brand I'm loyal to + oil-free sun protection to prevent breakouts
2) Almay Smart Shade CC Cream Just the right amount of coverage with SPF35
3) Sephora Mattifying Blotting Papers - Perfect for stashing in your purse to reduce shine on-the-go
4) Josie Maran Coconut Waterproof Cheek GelĂ©e - Coconut water-infused cheek stain that lasts up to 14 hours
5) NYX 'Dewy Finish' Makeup Setting Spray - Apply after makeup to help it stay-put in the heat & humidity
6) L'Oreal Sublime Sun Sunscreen Oil SPF50 - So lightweight you'll think you forgot to apply it
7) L'Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara - My favorite mascara in a waterproof formula
8) Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs - Helps cover veins, bruises, scars & gives legs an airbrushed look
9) Makeup Forever Aqua Rouge - The benefits of a lip stain & gloss combined into one long-lasting product
10) CARGO Water Resistant Bronzer - A flattering bronzer that won't smudge or smear when temperatures rise

Day to Night: LWD

I could easily argue that a little white dress is a summer staple and yet my closet was lacking that perfect style that could be dressed up or down.  Then I was introduced to Tailor and Stylist and I came across this gem.  The lightweight fabric is ideal for summer and I love the mix of hard and soft (feminine pleats + faux leather straps).  I decided to share two different ways to wear my new favorite LWD to show how to seamlessly transition this piece from day to evening!  If you're having a hard time finding that just-right style, you can always rent a designer dress.

Touch of Turquoise

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Weekend!  We took full advantage of the gorgeous weather & spent most of our time outdoors - going for hikes, having a BBQ with friends & some family picnics in the park.  I wore this for an afternoon walk along the canal on our way to lunch on a slightly cool & breezy day.  Did you know that Stella & Dot has scarves & bags now, in addition to their amazing jewelry?  This printed scarf is that perfect summer layering piece - wear with a simple tee, cropped denim & sandals for the weekend; punch up an all-white ensemble for a sophisticated spin or use it as a wrap over a dress for evening.  You can see the other styles they have available here (really loving the striped one too)!

20 Under $20

Since today is the last chance for all those great Memorial Day sales, I thought it was the perfect time to take advantage of marked-down prices with this month's edition of TUT!  These pieces are just the right kind of easy-going attire I usually prefer during the summer - embroidered shorts, flat sandals, a straw tote & fun accessories (also, how cute is that chambray skirt?).  Everything you see below is $20 or less - proof that you don't have to spend a fortune to stay in style!

Pretty Pastels

I'm normally not one for a matchy-matchy look with accessories, but sometimes it can be fun when balanced in just the right way with other modern pieces.  For example, I loved the colors of this statement necklace so much that I wanted to match it with items I had in my closet.  I added the textured bag to break up the coordinating hues & some cap-toe pumps for a dose of shine.  It turned out to be just the right mix of casual polish & was the perfect choice for my son's preschool graduation earlier this week.  If you're looking for affordable jewelry (like this gorgeous necklace I'm wearing), check out Statement Baubles - they have a great selection of designer-inspired pieces and everything is budget-friendly!

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 top (here), H&M blazer (similar here or here) & jeans (similar here or here), Shoe Republic LA pumps (here), ModCloth bag (similar here or here), c/o Statement Baubles necklace (here) & bracelet (here), c/o Max & Chloe bracelet (here), Ray-Ban wayfarers (similar), Lips: L'Oreal Colour Caresse Cotton Pink

Shades of Blue

Lately I've been gravitating towards light & soothing colors, particularly this blue & white combination.  Something about the pairing of these two shades says "summer is here" (I've even started a Pinterest board dedicated to this mix here).  I've always been a sucker for stripes (if I weren't on a spending freeze, I would be scooping up this shirt in a heartbeat)...but I'm also loving the new floral, paisley & ikat prints in these calming hues.  I've rounded up my top favorites below, all under $50 and perfect for the season!

Following Suit

Short suits were a huge trend seen on the runways for spring and I, for one, am a big fan of this combination of tailored pieces.  But, since I began a spending freeze in May, I knew I couldn't go out and buy a new blazer + matching pair of shorts.  So instead, I used items I already had in my closet and went with basic black, plus a dash of sparkle.  How amazing is this emerald stone necklace from BaubleBar?  The colors make it look so rich & it's one of those pieces you could wear in winter or summer.  Since I love layering jewelry for a maximum statement, I paired it with another favorite BaubleBar piece for Friday night cocktails with my girlfriends.

Check out how my girl Kiley styled this same necklace over on A Sequin Dress at Breakfast.

What I'm wearing:
Joe Fresh blouse (here), H&M blazer (similar), Jennifer Lopez shorts (on sale here), BCBG Max Azria heels (similar), ASOS clutch (similar), Necklaces: BaubleBar Brushed Tab Strand (here) & c/o BaubleBar Glam Garden Bib (here), Bracelets: Vintage & Forever 21 (similar)

Fancy Footwork

After an 80 degree yesterday here in New York, I think it's finally safe to say that summer is right around the corner. Even though I love my heeled sandals & wedge espadrilles, there are so many chic flat options available that there's no reason to sacrifice comfort for style.  I've rounded up my top favorite neutral pairs below (all affordably-priced) and matched them up with coordinating Essie polishes...so you can get your feet summer ready!

1) Mossimo Supply Co. Sandals (on clearance!) + Essie Blanc
7) Gap Perforated Sandals (15% off w/ code GAPGIFT) + Essie Boom Boom Room

Relaxed Saturday

Some of the best weekends, in my opinion, are the ones where we have no plans at all.  There is nothing better than being able to sleep in, head down to the farmer's market to shop & end the afternoon at a nearby park for a picnic. This bag has quickly become my new favorite tote for such trips because it's so roomy & the sturdy reclaimed leather straps allow me to stuff it as full as I want.  Plus, I love the cool surplus vintage style...it's one of the few bags I own that my husband doesn't mind holding for me!

Bright White

White denim is undoubtedly a summer essential...but unfortunately, the perfect pair can be really hard to find.  I've tried on dozens of styles that were too thin & almost see-through (not a good look) and others that didn't have the right balance of structure + stretch to them.  Since I am pear-shaped, for years I stayed away from this shade of denim because I thought it would only further emphasize my larger lower half.  But, it's true what they say - it is all about the fit!

This cropped pair were a dream come true for me - a flawless fit, comfortable and surprisingly flattering.  Though they are a boyfriend shape, I sized down for more of a "skinny" look and I've been wearing them nonstop ever since.  I decided to share two of my favorite ways to style them - one casual day look and one slightly more polished.  If you've been afraid of white jeans in the past, like I was, I encourage you to give these a try - I promise you won't be disappointed (they also come in short & long lengths)!

What I'm wearing:
Dorothy Perkins blouse (here; use code DPFWE for 20% off), Gap blazer (similar), c/o Old Navy jeans (on sale here), Pour La Victoire heels via Marshall's (on sale here or here), c/o T+J Designs cuff (similar), c/o Send the Trend clutch (here), Nails: Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet
