Casual Friday

Being a fashion blogger, I put a lot of (probably unnecessary) pressure on myself to be creative with the outfits I share here.  Because I want the combinations to be new & groundbreaking and for them to inspire readers to try pairings they never considered before.  But, there is also something to be said for easy basics that you can layer together in an interesting way without going over the top.  This outfit is made up of some of my favorite pieces - a classic striped tee, moto jacket, casual cargo vest + my most comfortable jeans.  Let's be honest...sometimes the simplest outfits are the most wearable.

Trend Talk

My personal style has changed a lot over the years and one thing that I've learned above all else is how important it is to dress for your body type & to stay true to what makes you feel good.  Not every trend will work on every person (nor should they) and it's crucial to know what looks best on your frame before making an investment.  There is a difference between having an appreciation for fashion and buying into every new fad that comes out.

I always try to maintain a good balance of classic pieces with a few trendy styles so that my looks are modern but still sophisticated.  So, today I'm sharing my take on 3 of the top trends for spring and how to pull them off.  Other trends that are popular this season (but not shown here) are pastels, full midi skirts & sporty chic - let me know if you'd like to see another post on these styles & how to wear them!

Cozy Glam

Sometimes I find outfit inspiration in the most unexpected places.  The other day my daughter came out of her room wearing this color combination and it left me wondering why I'd never considered pairing pastel pink with chocolate brown & camel.  So I decided to try it for myself with a chunky sweater, oversized coat & cozy scarf...which proved to be the perfect combination for the "suddenly-winter-again" weather that resurfaced this week.

What I'm wearing:
Warehouse coat (similar here or here), Mango sweater (similar under $30 or under $60), H&M scarf (similar),
Paige Denim coated jeans (similar here or here), Forever 21 bag, c/o DMSX pumps (similar here or here), c/o ShopLately earrings, J. Crew iPhone case (similar), Nails: OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender

Repetitive Layers

I will be the first to admit that I'm a creature of habit - a lot of the pairings I wear day to day (particularly in winter) are just different variations of the same theme.  Button-down shirt + sweater + skirt or pants.  Even though there is nothing ground-breaking about this combination, depending on the pieces I choose, the finished looks can be very diverse (edgysophisticated or preppy).  So the next time you're standing in front of your closet & unsure of what to wear, try your own adaptation of these layered basics...it works every time!

What I'm wearing:
Lovers & Friends vest (similar here or here), Gap sweater (similar here or here), Old Navy shirt
Ann Taylor skirt (under $25!), Forever 21 boots (on sale!), Zara bag (similar here or here),

thredUP Style

I have always loved shopping at consignment, thrift & vintage stores because
you can find such unique pieces that no one else will have (not to mention the money you save!).  Which is why I'm so excited to share with you today about an amazing site called thredUP.  They are an online fashion resale store that sells like-new secondhand clothing, shoes & accessories for up to 90% off retail prices.  thredUP gave me a style challenge & provided me with a shopping credit - I was tasked with putting together outfits using pieces from their site.  I could not believe how many amazing designers they had (BCBG, Paige Denim, Equipment & Vince, to name a few) and everything in pristine condition...some even new with tags!

In addition to their already expansive store, they just announced that they will soon be adding a handbag shop + launching the new thredUP X later this spring, which will feature an exclusive collection of premium pieces from designer brands like Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch & more!  You can sign up here to receive a $5 shopping credit & be the first to get access to the new site.  Even better, help spread the word & you'll receive an additional $5 credit for every friend who signs up!  Interested in cleaning out your closet & earning a little extra cash?  You can find out all about their selling process & order your first clean-out bag here.

Their inventory is quite extensive so it took some time browsing to find the items I was looking for.  I decided to create 3 separate outfits, using shoes & accessories from my closet to finish off the looks.  I still cannot believe that I was able to buy these 8 pieces for under $200!  Not only does thredUP have an amazing selection & incredibly affordable prices, but their shipping was so speedy & the packaging made it feel like I'd purchased from a luxe boutique.  Everything was in impeccable condition when it arrived and I couldn't have been happier with the items I purchased.  Take a look at the outfits I created and let me know in the comments below which look is your favorite. Don't forget to sign up & check out their site to find your own amazing deals!

Yesterday was so gloriously warm & sunny that it prompted me to pull out all my spring clothes from storage & begin rearranging my closet for the coming season.  I may be jumping the gun a little, but it's hard not to get excited when the winter has been SO long & brutal.  These pieces would fit in nicely with other wardrobe basics, are ideal for wearing both now + well into the summer and they are all affordably priced!

Hope Springs

In anticipation of the 50-degree weather they are predicting for later this week in NY, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to break out a few spring pieces like a classic trench, light-washed chambray & white denim.  Though I'm sure the cold temperatures will return next week, I'm going to enjoy this slight warm-up while it lasts.  Other ways I would remix this outfit is to skip the sweater and wear the chambray tucked in with a leather belt & lace-up heels.  Or for a more relaxed feel, remove the trench & swap out the heels for sporty loafers.

Best Beauty Buys

Every couple of months, I share my new beauty discoveries with you.  Some are truly revolutionary and some are just fantastic new formulas of products I use every day.  These are all incredibly affordably priced & I can't say enough good things about them.  After trying these for a few weeks, I made a trip back to the drugstore to repurchase in bulk!  Read on below for my full review & more details on each item shown here.

This melon-scented gel is infused with jasmine, rose & vitamin E to help hydrate & moisturize cuticles.  The specially-designed applicator is ideal for on-the-go use; perfect for tossing in your purse!

One of the unfortunate side effects of Lupus is hair loss, which I've been experiencing ten-fold.  This is the first product I've tried that gave my strands lasting volume & made it look thick like it used to be.

This oil-free & fragrance-free serum absorbs quickly & works to resurface skin with a gentle glycolic peel.  After using this for 3 weeks, I've noticed firmer, smoother skin + an improvement in the fine lines around my eyes.

Though it takes some practice getting used to the unique tool, I loved how thickly it coated both the tops & bottoms of my lashes & gave them serious definition.  Tip: use the brushes to clamp on either side of your top lashes and then brush all the way through, curling the wand upwards.

This formula glides on so smooth, won't budge & makes it easy to highlight without messy creams or liquids.  I use it on the inner corners of my eyes and on my brow bone (also comes in black, charcoal & plum eyeliner).

The perfect combination of a creamy concealer with the illuminating benefits of a brightener. The peachy shade corrects redness & covers blemishes while the pinkish hue brightens under eyes for an instant pick-me-up (I use 100 Light).

Weekend Uniform

If you haven't already noticed, pink is kind of having a moment in fashion right now.  And since I received a question last week from a reader asking how to incorporate this on-trend color into her closet without it looking overly sweet...I decided to answer it with an outfit post.  Even if you've never thought of yourself as a girly girl, you can still pull off this feminine hue by layering it with casual, slightly undone basics like an oxford shirt & distressed jeans.  Top it off with classic sneakers + a sleek menswear coat and you've got a weekend look that's both cool & comfortable.

Just Add Plaid

Naturally, as soon as I swore to myself that I was done buying winter clothing, I came across this coat on an in-store clearance rack.  I remember really wanting a piece like this in early fall when everyone was buying plaid outerwear. Now I'm so glad that I didn't purchase at the beginning of the season because I saved so much by waiting (it was less than $40!) and, thanks to the classic shape, I can wear it for years to come.

Back in December, I partnered with DaisyGem to give back to an organization that is near & dear to my heart.  It was so successful that we've decided to team up again for the month of February.  They are offering an exclusive discount for all items on their site - simply use code PPFNHU at checkout to receive 10% off your order (free shipping on purchases over $20!).  In addition to this discount, DaisyGem has graciously offered to donate 15% of the proceeds of all orders placed to the Remember Nhu foundation.  They have so many great pieces & their jewelry is all affordably priced - it's a great way to shop & support a worthy cause at the same time!
