Closet Organization

Last summer, when we moved into our new house, I had to say goodbye to my dressing room & downsize to a considerably smaller closet.  This meant rethinking how I would organize my clothes, shoes & accessories + getting creative with storage solutions. I recently received an email from a reader asking for closet organization tips, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to share a few ideas + some items that I can't live without.  Before you get to work on organizing your things, I recommend doing a thorough closet purging first.  Once you've edited your wardrobe, you will have a much clearer picture of what you have to work with.  I've put all my top tips into an easy to use one-sheet so you can Pin It for later or print it out for quick reference.  And be sure to check out the links below for my must-have closet accessories, plus clothing & shoe care products!

Off The Grid

I've always loved mixing prints - in my opinion, there's no reason to feel intimidated by this trend.  If you've never tried it before, ease into this style by choosing pieces that have at least one color in common.  This striped blouse is one of the oldest pieces I own, but I'll never get rid of it because it's so easy to pair with other items in my closet. So when I found this boxy windowpane sweater over the weekend, I knew they'd be a match made in print-mixed heaven.  And I couldn't resist adding an extra dose of playfulness by throwing on my new leopard heels!

If you need more daily outfit inspiration, then you'll be excited to learn about a new app I was recently introduced to called WEAR.  It’s a fashion community featuring trending looks from all over the world.  You can use it to snap photos of items you find while shopping and then your friends can help you decide if you should purchase or give you ideas for how to style it.  And you can shop directly from the app too, which is so convenient when browsing what other people are wearing.  You can also snap a photo of your outfit & upload it  - then the app will show you how other women styled those same pieces...giving you tons of ideas for endless combinations!  If you love finding new ways to wear what you already have in your closet or aren't sure what to buy next, I definitely recommend checking it out.  You can view my WEAR profile and sign up to create your own account here.  (On October 31st, one blogger and one lucky reader will be selected to have a look they shared on WEAR featured on a page in NYLON Magazine!)

Keep It Classic

When I can't decide what to wear, I like to keep it simple with classic layers: a crisp button-down shirt (love the longer length of this one), my favorite jeans, dainty jewelry (this initial necklace is my new go-to for everyday) + one standout piece (how amazing is this studded clutch?!).  It's a no-fail combination that always works & one that I know I will feel great in.  What's your fall-back uniform when nothing else feels right?

Perfect Pairings: Leopard

If Tuesday's post was any indication, I'm on a serious leopard kick right now.  It's a classic print that never truly goes out of style and couldn't be more perfect for the autumn season.  I've rounded up the best affordable pieces I could find in both bold oversized patterns & more subdued sophisticated styles.  If you've never incorporated this print into your closet, why not take a walk on the wild side?  And be sure to check out the scrolling bar below for even more leopard finds, including bags, scarves & shoes!

Quilted & Pinstriped

Last week my husband and I had the chance to sneak in a lunch date, while the kids were at school, and we decided to dress up "just because".  So, instead of wearing my usual skinny jeans + heels combination, I opted for a cozy but sophisticated look.  Both of these pieces are insanely comfortable - I literally could sleep in this sweatshirt...it's so soft!  And the combination of the two resulted in a modern look that I absolutely love - did I mention both these pieces are under $30 each?!  Nothing beats getting away with wearing clothes that are comfy (& affordable) but look chic!

What I'm wearing:
c/o Dorothy Perkins sweatshirt (also in gray; I'm wearing a US 6), c/o Dorothy Perkins skirt (I'm wearing a US 6), c/o JustFab booties (similar here or here), thrifted Salvatore Ferragamo bag (similar here or here)
c/o BaubleBar ring (similar), Forever 21 necklace (similar), c/o ShopLately cuff

Leopard Print Nails

It's been far too long since I've created a new manicure for the site (see previous posts here) and I finally had the time this weekend to sit down & have some fun with my polish again.  I was inspired by the print of this Old Navy sweater & wanted to recreate a leopard pattern using neutral tones.  The great thing about leopard print is that it isn't an exact science like stripes or polka dots.  The more irregular you do it, the more authentic it looks.

You can do this design with any colors (my daughter can't wait for me to try one using pinks for her nails & toes!). I begin all my manicures with clean dry nails & start by filing and buffing them, pushing back my cuticles & applying base coat.  Once your base coat is dry, you're ready to get started.  Here are the steps to creating this leopard-print manicure:

Products used

Step 1: Paint on your gray base polish - make sure you have full coverage/opacity since you'll only be doing one coat.  Let dry completely.
Step 2: Use silver polish to create a scattered polka dot pattern.  The more random the placement, the better.  Be sure to leave enough room between dots to create the surrounding leopard design.  Let dry completely.
Step 3: Pour a small amount of black polish onto a paper plate.  Dip the stylus or end of a straightened-out bobby pin into the polish and carefully apply around the silver dots.  (If your pattern looks too bare when you're done surrounding the dots, you can fill in with small polka dots as I did here.)  Let dry completely - if you try to apply the topcoat too soon, the design will smear.
Step 4: Apply a fast-drying top coat & let dry.

Work to Weekend

Two questions I get asked frequently are how to make workwear appropriately stylish/modern and how to dress in a chic but comfortable way for the weekend.  So today I'm sharing two outfit ideas - one for each of these situations. When it comes to office attire, it's important to let your personality shine through.  For me, that means mixing tailored items with a little bit of edge (like a moto jacket in an unexpected hue).  This balances out more conservative pieces and helps the outfit feel less stuffy...while a buttoned-up blouse + slim cropped trousers keep it classic & sophisticated.

What I'm wearing:
c/o ShopSosie jacket (or similar here), c/o TopShop shirt (I'm wearing a US 6),
c/o TopShop trousers (I'm wearing a US 4), c/o TopShop heels
Romeo & Juliet Couture bag (similar here or here), Lips: Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm (Standout)

On the weekend, it's all about comfort - especially if you work in an office where you have to be dressed up all week long.  But wearing comfortable pieces doesn't mean you are confined to sweatpants & sneakers.  Choose a soft sweatshirt, easy knit skirt & ankle boots for an outfit that looks like you put some effort into it...without sacrificing the coziness you crave.  Add a vest or denim jacket on top & you've got a casual look with just the right amount of polish.

What I'm wearing:
Lovers & Friends vest (similar here or here), c/o TopShop sweatshirt (I'm wearing a US 2),
c/o TopShop skirt (I'm wearing a US 6), Forever 21 boots (similar here or here),
ASOS clutch (similar here or here), Zara bracelets (similar here and here)

VIP Treatment

Nothing gets my heart racing like a good sale - especially when it involves pieces I've had on my wish list for a while.  There's no satisfaction like that of knowing you have worked the system, shopped smart & are getting something you love for a great price!  I've mentioned here before that I rarely pay full price for anything - and it's because, after years of shopping experience, I've learned that there is almost ALWAYS a way to get what you want for less.

If you're new to PPF or don't follow on Facebook, you may not be aware that I have an entire page on my site that's dedicated to sales & coupons.  I manually update this list every morning so you can be sure you're saving every possible penny when shopping at your favorite stores.  Macy's just launched their huge VIP sale on Tuesday so I'm sharing with you what I found while shopping earlier this week + a few of my top picks under $100 from their site so you can score some deals this weekend (the sale ends Sunday).  Just use code VIP to get 20% off your online purchase or print your coupon here to shop in-store (some exclusions apply).

Steals Under $30

Now that there's finally a slight chill in the air, it's time to pull out those warmer knits & layer up!  I have been favoring a lot of plaid and (faux) leather in my wardrobe this season, which is definitely reflected in this month's round-up.  I tried to create several different looks for both work & weekend activities and, as usual, everything is priced at $30 or less!

My Golden Tote

I don't know how many times I've heard from friends & readers that they wished they had a personal shopper who could do the work of finding great pieces for them.  And I completely understand - because we are all busy and sometimes searching for the items you want (at a fair price) can be really time consuming...and frustrating!  Which is why I'm thrilled to share with you today about Golden Tote.

It's an online site where you can choose between 2 different levels of service: get 2-3 items for $49 (a $200 value) or 5-7 items for $149 (up to $600 value).  You start by filling out your style profile, select 1-2 items for your bag and the rest of the pieces are chosen for you, carefully selected by a stylist, based on your preferences.  They have new sale items that launch on the first Monday of every month so you can find the best that the season has to offer. You can view their new arrivals for September here.

I had the chance to try out their service & was so impressed not just with the quality of the items they sent me, but also how well the "surprise" pieces matched up with my own personal style.  A time saver and a money saver?  Sign me up!  I've taken my favorite items from my tote (a swingy knit dress, classic plaid button-down & cozy textured sweatshirt) and styled them into 3 outfits below.  Take a look & let me know which is your favorite...then click here to sign up with Golden Tote so you can do the same!
