A Grateful Heart

For the last two years, I have wanted to write this post.  And every time I've sat down to type it out, I cannot get past the first paragraph because my emotions are so close to the surface.  It instantly brings me to tears the moment I think about it because I am completely overcome with gratitude.  But, I don't want to put it off anymore.  I don't want to let another day pass without telling you the truth.  And "thank you" simply doesn't cut it - you need to know the whole story.

As many of you long-time readers may recall, at the end of September 2012, my husband lost his job.  I vividly remember when he called me from his office to tell me what had taken place.  We knew layoffs were happening at his company but we didn't expect that he would be let go.  As he pulled in the driveway that afternoon & unpacked the boxes from his car, I felt a strange sense of peace wash over me - I somehow knew that everything was going to be okay.  I should have been panicking about how we were going to pay our mortgage, keep the kids in the private school they loved and continue to pay off our medical debts. But, amazingly, my faith didn't waver...and though I waited for that feeling of impending doom, it never came.

Now, two years later, I can so clearly see how it was all unfolding and how it was all a part of God's perfect plan. The truth is that my husband was out of work for over a year and it was only because of your participation with & sharing of my site that we were able to survive that difficult time.  Though you may not have known it, because of your support, this blog was able to meet our financial needs.  When someone gives your family a gift like that, you don't take it lightly.  There are so many nights that my husband & I have sat talking about this, reflecting back on it all, and just wept together...because we feel so overwhelmingly blessed.

Although this blog began as a hobby & creative outlet for me, it has evolved into something so much greater than I ever could have imagined.  And I don't say that out of pride for what it has brought me - though I'm appreciative of every opportunity that's come my way...those are not the things that motivate me to work harder; they are not what drives me.  At the end of the day, it really isn't about me at all.

I have taken this job seriously because I enjoy what I am doing - but, more importantly, because it is a way to take care of the people I love most.  Like every working mom, there are many days when I find it difficult to manage the responsibilities of work & parenting. But, even when my plate is full & I'm struggling to balance it all...you will never hear me complain. Because every moment is a blessing.  Every single aspect of this job is a gift because it's providing for my family.

I'm sharing all of this today because I want to acknowledge the role that you, as readers, have played & the significant impact it has had on our lives.  We want you to know how incredibly grateful we are & how often we thank God for each one of you.  I am touched by your kindness, humbled by your loyalty & honored that you have made PPF part of your daily routine.  I truly hope that comes across in the effort that I put into the posts I create and in my responses to your comments & emails.  I want every single word I write here & every online interaction that I have to be grace-filled, unmistakably sincere and dripping with gratitude.  Because I know full-well that it could all be gone tomorrow and I don't want to take a second for granted.  This is me...heart overflowing, tears spilling out...saying thank you.

Touch of Leopard

After last week's post about layering dresses, I decided to put it into practice myself by taking one of my favorite summer LBD's (last seen here) and styling it up for the cold weather.  I have a feeling I'll be utilizing this method quite frequently this winter (with wool tights once it starts snowing again).  This afternoon, we are driving up to Maine to spend the week with friends & we couldn't be more excited for a little rest & relaxation.  Posts here will continue right up until Thanksgiving, including a comprehensive Black Friday sales list that you won't want to miss!

What I'm wearing:
Mango vest (similar save, spend or splurge), Zara sweater (similar here or here),
Banana Republic scarf (similar here or here), Old Navy dress (similar skirts here & here), Forever 21 socks, c/o JustFab boots, c/o Oasis bag, Zara hat (similar), Bracelets: Forever 21 (similar here and here

Saving with Shopular

With Black Friday just around the corner, I've already begun creating my shopping strategy for this year.  I know a lot of people don't like fighting the crowds and standing in lines, but after doing it for 4 years & finding some truly amazing deals, I can honestly say that it's worth it.  If you go into the experience with a positive attitude and look at it as an adventure, you will have so much more fun & are less likely to get frustrated along the way.  Despite other stories I've heard, I have always had the best interactions with helpful store staff & friendly fellow shoppers.  I usually take a girlfriend or family member with me (last year my mom tagged along and she was a trooper!).   I've found that it helps to have a partner in crime to keep your energy up + you can take turns waiting in line while the other person shops for last minute deals.

Wearing: Forever 21 cape, c/o TopShop shirt (similar), Merona beltMango jeans, Nails: Revlon Vixen

I decided to do a trial run earlier this week using a new app that I was recently introduced to called Shopular.  For everyday life, I tend to do a lot of my shopping online and because I update my Sales Alerts page regularly, I am usually aware of the deals happening online at my favorite stores.  But, so often retailers will offer different discounts online than they do in stores - even more frustrating is when there is a coupon offer and you don't have it with you so you can't take advantage of the savings.  This is where Shopular comes in - you simply download the free app and quickly create an account with them.  You can select your favorites from a list of over 200 retailers and it will add to your feed any sales and coupons currently being offered at those stores.  For someone who doesn't want to keep track of paper coupons, it's incredibly convenient to have all that information right at my fingertips.  No need to search online, save emails or print coupons!

Because I only recommend things here on PPF that I personally have tried & been impressed with, I wanted to share with you today about my shopping experience with Shopular.  I had some returns to make at my local mall and as I was walking into the store, a notification from Shopular popped up to let me know that Lord & Taylor was having a huge sale.  Which was perfect timing because there were a few things I've had on my wish list for a while.  I simply clicked on the retailer's name and it pulled up a 20% off coupon that I could use at checkout! In this particular case, I wouldn't have been able to receive that discount if I didn't have the app or the physical printed coupon for them to scan at the register.

I am so excited because using Shopular will make my shopping this Black Friday even easier.  If there are any coupons or sales I wasn't aware of, I will have access to everything on the go & it will automatically notify me of deals at stores nearby so I won't miss out on anything!  Do you plan on braving the crowds this Black Friday?  I'd love to hear your opinions & experiences in the comments below.  And be sure to give Shopular a try on your next shopping trip so you get the lowest price possible on all your holiday gifts (or treats for yourself)!

Cold-Weather Dressing

This time of year is typically when I fall into a rut with my outfit choices - mainly because all I really care about is staying warm.  But, I do believe it's important to get the most out of your wardrobe year-round and I fully believe you can still wear the majority of your closet by employing some strategic layering.  So today I'm sharing some ideas for ways to wear your dresses during the cold-weather months...even those sleeveless styles!  The outfits I've put together below build from left to right (base layer to top) - just add tights or warm socks, if need be, and you're ready to face the elements in style.  And the best news is that every piece you see here is 25% off using code BESTEVER (+ free shipping)!

Pink Check

If this week was any indication of what the rest of the season holds, it's going to be a long & hard winter.  My solution is to layer as much as possible & choose chic outerwear like this fuzzy pink coat.  The oversized boyfriend fit is perfectly on-trend and the substantial fabric makes it incredibly insulating.  I'm planning on pairing it with winter whites next - like these skinny jeans, this chunky sweater & neutral-hued ankle boots.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Dorothy Perkins coat (I'm wearing a US 4; also in petite), Forever 21 sweater, LOFT shirt (also in petite),

Getting Cozy

We shot these pictures last week when there were leaves still on the trees and the temperature actually felt like fall. Unfortunately, we are now in the midst of a huge snowstorm and it's inconceivable to head outside without a parka, gloves & hat on.  But for those of you who are not stuck shoveling snow, these outfits are ideal for the slightly chilly (but not freezing) weather.

Today I'm sharing 2 cozy looks I created with favorites from 6pm.com.  If you're not familiar with their site, they carry tons of name-brand and designer apparel, shoes & accessories at discounted prices + they offer free shipping on all orders.  There are some amazing deals to be found on sweaters, boots, outerwear & more.  As part of my collaboration with them, I created a 30+ piece gift guide of luxurious & cozy pieces (all under $100) - check out my top picks in the scrolling bar below!
