Comfort Chic

When I find truly versatile & affordable items, not only do I buy them quickly...but I tend to wear them a lot.  This year I discovered the incredible adaptability of vests and I keep finding more reasons to love this layering piece.  I wore this outfit on a brunch date with my husband earlier this week.  Then, later in the day, before I ran to pick up my kids from school & grab some groceries, I simply changed out the button-down blouse for a graphic tee and swapped the pointed flats for sneakers.  Another benefit of comfortable & polished styles like these is that they transition so easily with just a quick switch!

Perfect Pairings: Lace

Spring is the perfect time to embrace your feminine side and there's nothing more ladylike than lace.  The key to styling these pieces is to mix in either relaxed or edgy accents - it helps balance out the sweetness of this dainty fabric and keeps the overall look feeling modern.  Here are a few of my favorite examples for the season (all under $75) and you can shop even more affordable lace styles below!

Seasoned Favorites

There is a certain comfort that comes from wearing well-loved pieces that you've owned for years - they are perfectly worn-in, you know they fit well and they always feel "right".  This is an entire outfit of just such items: a featherweight tee, stretchy knit blazer and the oldest flats in my closet (which are still in amazing shape & seem to get more comfortable with each wear).  Further proof that it's not just investment items that will stand the test of time!

Lace + Leather

It's funny how I tend to go through phases with both my clothing & accessory choices.  For the longest time, I would wear necklaces with almost every outfit and somehow I felt that my looks were incomplete without them.  Maybe it has something to do with the warmer weather, but lately I've been favoring statement earrings over every other jewelry option.  They are (obviously) ideal for an evening out, but I also love the contrast of wearing them with casual everyday pieces like a graphic tee & boyfriend jeans.  Check out some of my favorite styles below - all under $50!

Thoroughly Modern

When getting ready for a night out, whether it's a date with my husband or cocktails with girlfriends, I usually gravitate towards a silky blouse & skirt or a cami, blazer & skinny jeans. But every once in a while, it's nice to step outside my comfort zone and try something totally different and unexpected.  I've used this vest before as a layering piece (here), but I like the idea of wearing it alone & buttoned up for a modern take on evening separates.  It has a tailored & sophisticated feel that's a nice departure from the feminine styles I normally wear.  If you don't have a menswear-style vest, try this same concept with a buttoned-up blazer (hint: secure the inside of the lapel at your bust with double-stick tape or a hidden safety pin so you don't risk revealing too much).

What I'm wearing:
c/o LuLu*s vest, Forever 21 trousers (similar here or here), Zara heels (also in black)
Expressions NYC clutch (similar here or here), A.V. Max cuff c/o Lemon Stripes,
c/o Jeweliq earrings, Rings: H&M (similar) and c/o Jeweliq

20 Under $20

In an effort to break out of my current styling rut, I'm focusing on bright colors and graphic prints for spring & summer.  These pieces have just the right balance of edge & ease that's ideal for the current season - and they'd be a cinch to mix & match with basics I already have in my closet.  Plus each item here is so affordably priced, you don't have to feel guilty if you pick up more than one!

The Usual

As I was heading out the door the other day to run a few errands, my husband commented that he liked my outfit & suggested that it be featured on the blog.  I was hesitant to agree since I considered the pairing to be nothing exciting or ground-breaking...just my usual mix of easy basics with a messy ponytail (and these minimalist earrings, which have been on repeat).  But, I decided that he had a good point - because I always want to honestly represent myself here and share with you not only inspirational looks, but also my everyday outfits, no matter how expected they may seem.  And this is clearly one of my go-to combinations that I throw on without even thinking about it, because I know I'll feel comfortable & polished at the same time (see previous variations hereherehere & here).

What I'm wearing:
Worthington blazer (similar here or here), J. Crew tee (similar), Gap jeans (similar), Steve Madden pumps, Mango clutch (similar here or here), Bracelets: Vintage (similar), Anne Klein (similar) & Forever 21, c/o BaubleBar ring, c/o ShopLately earrings, Lips: L'Oreal Colour Riche (Fairest Nude)

Breezy Embroidery

Though I wouldn't describe my everyday personal style as bohemian, I do love a good gauzy embroidered top this time of year.  They are loose, airy and have an effortless relaxed feel that's perfect for wearing with denim (skirts, jeans or shorts).  This one was a purchase from last year that I nearly wore to death, but there are dozens of affordable similar styles out right now that are just as great (see below).

What I'm wearing:
Mango top (similar options below), Gap skirt (similar herehere or here), c/o Old Navy bag (on sale!),
c/o ShoeMint heels (similar here or here), Bracelets: Vintage (similar here and here),

Smart Shopping

One of the questions I get asked most frequently is about my strategy for shopping and my best money-saving tips.  So, as a follow up to this closet clean-out post, I decided to compile all my budgeting/shopping advice + the methods I use into one document that will be easy for you to save, print out, pin or reference when you need it most.  I personally find the "ask before buying" questions to be crucial in deterring me from those impulse purchases I may be tempted to make.  I hope this will be a helpful guide to use when adding pieces to your wardrobe & ensuring you spend your money wisely.  If you have any suggestions to add to this list, please feel free to share in the comments below!

Cheery Florals

On Monday, our weather hit an all-time high of 79 and it felt like heaven.  There's nothing like feeling the warmth of the sun on your face after 6 straight months of the hardest winter ever.  So I took full advantage of the balmy temperatures & put on something equally as cheerful - I love the slightly retro feel to this floral print and the subtle quilted texture.  Of course, now I want to get the matching skirt too!  There's something mood-boosting about a florals like this that makes me want to wear them all season long.
