Key Lime

This is the type of outfit I could wear almost every day - a lightweight top with feminine details, a pleated midi skirt and sturdy block-heel sandals.  I love easy pieces like this that are as pretty as they are comfortable ~ nothing restricting or form-fitting...but still polished, fun & ideal for a summer date night or heading to brunch with friends.

Sunny Days

Though I am well-known for consistently being over-dressed everywhere I go (which my husband loves to tease me about), there are definitely days when I just want to wear easy & relaxed pieces...especially in the summertime.  This particular combination would be perfect for vacation, heading to the beach or, in my case, just enjoying a waterfront stroll on an unseasonably hot day.  (Styling tip: when wearing open-back tops & dresses, I recommend this type of bra to help provide invisible support.)

What I'm wearing:

Behind The Scenes

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to head into the city to do a fun makeup shoot for a bridal website & I got to try out the new TEMPTU® Airbrush System.  I had so much fun playing around with their kit and thought I would share a few images from the shoot.

I would definitely consider this to be an investment piece of equipment & something to save up for (if it makes sense for you).  For those who are interested, you can get 20% off any airbrush kit from TEMPTU with code PPF20.

Perfect Pairings: Ruffles

I decided to focus this month's Perfect Pairings on a trend that was seen all over the spring runways - designers like Marni, Dries Van Noten & Rochas created show-stopping looks by embracing soft & sweet ruffles.  But, even if your style isn't overtly feminine, there's still plenty of ways to modernize these frilly frocks by balancing them out with structured pieces.  This keeps the overall look feeling less girly & more sophisticated.  Take a look at a few outfit ideas I've put together here + shop my top affordable picks below!

Smooth It Out

I'm a firm believer that everything in your closet looks better when you start with the right foundation. Especially when choosing a form-fitting dress or pieces that have particularly clingy fabric (think stretch jersey, modal or rayon), it's so important to have the appropriate undergarment to create a smooth, seam-free finish.  These Jockey® Skimmies® Slipshorts are a new favorite because the fabric is so lightweight & breathable, which makes them ideal for the warmer weather.  I also love that they come in an anti-static version (great for wearing under your silk skirts & dresses!).

I'm partnering with Jockey® today to promote their Seize the Day in Skimmies® Challenge.  They have created 25 days of challenges designed to help women push past their comfort zones and experience freedom & spontaneity thanks to Skimmies® slipshorts.  You can get all the details on the challenge rules, prizes & how to enter on their Facebook page.  For Skimmies® style tips, outfit ideas & more from Jockey & Rachel Zoe, click here.

We Remember

My dad served in the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War.  He talks very little about it because of the trauma that took place during that time.  But I do know that he was awarded the Bronze Star for acts of heroism during battle and that several of his friends died in the war.  He was engaged to my mom when he was first sent overseas and I remember her telling me stories when I was a little girl about how afraid she was that they would never see their wedding day.  We are all so thankful that he did return home safely; but the memory of those that he fought alongside & who lost their lives will always be with him.

So today, whether you are throwing a party, having a BBQ with friends or spending time outdoors, let's not forget the reason we are able to enjoy all these freedoms.  And that the people who sacrificed their lives to give us that gift left behind families, wives & children who will never be the same without them.  Let's take a moment today to honor the memory of those who fought with incredible strength, bravery & valor for our country.

Mandarin Orange

I seem to have fallen into a rut lately of wearing outfits comprised of mainly neutrals or soft pastels.  Not that there's anything wrong with that...but if there ever was a season to embrace bright hues, it's spring!  So I have resolved to start injecting more vivid colors into my looks.  This gorgeous citrus orange is such a fun shade and one that my closet was previously lacking. Since it's a bold statement on its own, I decided to temper it with white basics for a polished feel.

What I'm wearing:
H&M blazer, c/o Dorothy Perkins shirt (I'm wearing a US 6),

Spring Style + LeTote

Ever bought something you thought you would love only to return it later?  Or worse...lose your receipt or let the 30-day window pass and you're stuck with something you'll never wear?  Then you will be excited to learn about a new online subscription service called LeTote.  If you haven't heard of them before, think of it as a fashion rental service where you can try before you buy.

Here's how it works: you pay $49/month & browse their site to add the items you love to your virtual closet.  The more items you like, the better your chance of getting what you want.  Once a month, they send you a tote with 3 garments and 2 accessories for you to wear as much as you want & keep as long as you want - there are no return dates or late fees!  If you decide you want to keep something for good, you can hang onto it and they will charge you a discounted price from the retail value.  When you're ready for another tote, just send everything back in the prepaid package & start over again.

They graciously invited me to try out their service & style the pieces from the tote they sent me into looks to share with you.  I chose versatile spring items that would be easy to dress up or down (a basic striped top, a t-shirt dress & a pretty floral tank).  I've paired them with pieces from my own closet to create 3 different outfits (one feminine, one sporty & one modern).  Take a look at what I've put together below and let me know what you think of their site!

Braids: Day to Night

I'm so excited to share with you today the first in a new series of hairstyle posts!  One of my 2014 goals for PPF was to start to incorporate more hair and beauty tutorials since so many of you have been asking for this.  I've partnered with TRESemmé to take runway-inspired looks and translate them into everyday styles that anyone can do.  I'll be posting one new style each month and including step-by-step instructions so you can recreate them at home.

For this month's post, I'm drawing inspiration from the Rebecca Minkoff show, where they featured messy braided updo's.  I have always loved braids because they have an effortless, relaxed feel to them that's perfect for spring & summer (great for those days when your hair isn't cooperating or it's too humid outside to wear it down).  I decided to show 2 looks - one that's ideal for daytime and one that has a romantic twist for an evening out.

I like doing a side braid for everyday because it's quick & easy.  You want to start with a deep side part and do the braid on the side with the most hair.  If you have side-swept bangs like me, make sure your braid is on the same side as your bangs.  Here's what you need to get started:

Because my hair is mid-length and has some layers, it can be hard to keep it all in a side braid without the shorter pieces falling out by the end of the day.  So, this is my favorite technique for ensuring it stays put. Here's the steps to recreate:

* To start, smooth on a drop of TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Smoothing Creme Serum to keep strands silky & control frizz (up to 48 hours!).

1) Separate hair into two sections, pin one side up & braid the lower section, working it around the back of your neck to the other side
(you can do a regular or french braid for this step).  Secure with a clear elastic.
2) Take the top section of hair down & separate into two equal parts.
3) Begin to braid with the 2 hair sections and the smaller braid.
Slide the clear elastic out of the smaller braid when you reach the end.
4) Secure with a clear elastic or leather tie.
5) After the style is complete, I like to add a little bit of TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Illuminating Shine Spray for extra shine and smoothness.
6) Finished product.

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 top (similar here or here), The Limited camiJordache jeans c/o WalMart, Report sandals, Pulicati tote (similar here or here), Zara bracelets (similar here and here), Forever 21 necklace (similar), Nails: Essie Tart Deco

For an evening out, I like creating a romantic updo that's soft & pretty.  I personally find that my hair holds updo's best if it's not freshly washed - this dry shampoo is my favorite for absorbing oil & refreshing my hair between blowouts.  Here's what you need to get started:

Pulling all of your hair away from your face really helps draw attention to your features - great for pairing with a smokey eye.  This version is simple enough for anyone to do at home and works well on shorter hair lengths too.  Here's the steps to recreate:

1) Start by lightly spraying TRESemmé Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo on your roots to absorb oil & refresh hair.
2) Make a deep side part and begin french braiding the larger section of hair back towards your ear, stopping the french braid just above the ear and continuing with a regular braid until you reach the ends. Secure with a clear elastic.
3) Gather the braid along with the rest of your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
4) Twist hair into a bun and secure with spin pins and/or bobby pins.
5) Lightly mist with a TRESemmé Extra Firm Control Hairspray.
6) Finished product.

What I'm wearing:
Gap dress (similar here or here), BCBG heels (similar), Expressions NYC cluch (similar here or here), c/o ShopLately necklace, c/o WalMart cuffs, Lips: Maybelline Color Elixir (Raspberry Rhapsody)
