Modern Prep

My favorite part of the week is when my husband & I get a chance to grab a late brunch or coffee together - sometimes we dress up for no reason and other times we go right after our "workout date" at the gym.  This week, I decided on these slightly preppy layers with a modern edge - in case you're wondering, my plan is to forgo tights for as long as I can possibly stand it since I'll be forced to wear them for the next 4+ months.  But, you could also easily swap out the skirt for skinny jeans if it's too chilly where you live.

What I'm wearing:
J. Crew Factory sweater (31% off + free shipping w/ code CANDYPLS - I'm wearing an XS),
Joe Fresh shirt (15% off w/ code PUMPKIN - I'm wearing a Small),
Zara skirt (similar under $25under $50 or under $70), J. Crew socksc/o JustFab Taya boots
NastyGal satchel (similar), Sole Society ring, Bracelets: J. Crew (similar),
Madewell (similar), J. Crew & Vintage (similar), Ray-Ban wayfarers

Sleeping Beauty

I love this time of year because it involves turning on our fireplace, snuggling under warm blankets and multiple cups of coffee (this recipe is my current favorite).  Our weather is dipping down into the 30's later this week so I decided it was finally time to swap out my lightweight pajamas & loungewear for some more substantial pieces. These options below are affordably priced and would be perfect for keeping cozy all winter long.

Navy Pinstripe

It seems like every time my hair finally reaches a decent past-shoulder length, I start getting the urge to chop it off again.  I've been going back & forth for weeks now and I have yet to decide what to do with it.  So, my solution for now is to simply tuck my ends into an oversized blanket scarf & pretend like it's short for the time being.   As a side note, I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I can wear light layers without a coat - it's getting downright frigid here in NY (they are forecasting snow for this weekend)!

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 shirt, c/o LuLu*s vest (similar), Forever 21 scarf, Mossimo jeans, H&M loafers
H&M bag (similar here or here), c/o BaubleBar earrings, Rings: H&M (similar) & c/o ShopLately (similar),
Michael Kors watch (similar), Bracelets: Vintage & LOFT

Birthday Girl

Every year my husband requests a wish list of items that I'd like to receive for my birthday and his only rule is
that they have to be things I wouldn't buy for myself.  Even though my big day isn't for another 2 weeks, we are celebrating a little early this year since I will be recovering from surgery the weekend of my actual birthday.
Here are a few things I'd love to receive that I know I would use frequently this season:

Classic & Cozy

If I had to guess, I would say that 50% or more of my wardrobe is from Forever 21.  Some people find it intimidating to shop because their selection is so vast & it's hard to know where to begin.  But, I have found some of my absolute favorite pieces by just taking the time to look.  I also make it a habit to check the new arrivals section of their site on a daily basis so I can catch great steals before they sell out.

A classic toggle coat has been on my wish list for years - I had previously bookmarked this J. Crew style, but I wasn't about to pay $200.  So when I saw this one pop up at Forever 21 online, I was so excited.  It has all the details I was looking for - a warm wool-blend, front pockets, a longer length...and the price was perfect.  Their fall collection is really amazing this year - so, to help you sort through their extensive inventory, I've rounded up my top sweater & outerwear picks from their site below!

What I'm wearing:
c/o Forever 21 Toggle Coat (I'm wearing a Small), c/o Forever 21 Turtleneck SweaterLOFT Shirt
H&M Pants, Forever 21 Boots (similar here or here), Romeo & Juliet Couture Bag (similar),

Off Duty

Although I tend to favor sophisticated & tailored styles most of the time, my weekends are usually spent in casual & comfortable pieces.  I recently picked up this open-front sweater/jacket hybrid (during a 40% off friends & family sale) & it's the ideal piece for wearing over tissue-thin tees or adding more substantial layers underneath when the weather gets colder.  I love styles like this that strike just the right balance between cozy & modern...and honestly, any combination of plaid & leather is a winner in my book.

What I'm wearing:
Saks Fifth Avenue sweater (I'm wearing a Small), Forever 21 chambray shirt (similar under $25 or under $55), Forever 21 striped top (also similar here), c/o Old Navy jeans, c/o JustFab Taya boots, NastyGal satchel (similar), Zara bracelets (similar), Rings: c/o Prima Donna & Forever 21 (similar)

All In One

One of the questions I get asked frequently is how to layer without adding bulk.  I'm a big fan of piled-on pieces, but I understand not wanting to look bigger than you truly are.  Which is why I love the tops I've seen this season that are a knit & button-down mix all in one piece.  The great thing about a top like this is that the layering is built right in.  The sweater material is stretchy, soft & lightweight + it has the chic details of a chiffon shirt sewn in underneath (without adding another full layer to your look).  Genius!

What I'm wearing:
Mango sleeveless coat (similar in black, in gray or in plaid),
c/o Dorothy Perkins top (25% off w/ code DPFW25; I'm wearing a US 6 Tall - also in regular & petite),
c/o Old Navy jeansIvanka Trump pumps, c/o ShopLately clutch, Michael Kors watch (similar),
Vintage bracelets, Zara ring (similar), Forever 21 earrings (similar), Ray-Ban wayfarers

Steals Under $30

One of the great things about this time of year, as we near the holiday season, is that there are so many amazing sales happening.  I do my best to keep a close eye on these and alert you daily of the best deals so you can take full advantage of them.  This recurring SUT series is another fun way to not only show you my hand-picked favorites, but to also provide outfit pairing ideas for items you may already own.  So even if you're on a spending freeze, hopefully this will provide a little inspiration!

Moto Magic

It's amazing how adding one edgy accent to otherwise classic & conservative separates can completely modernize a look.  In my opinion, a moto jacket in luxe faux leather (that looks & feels real) is a fall wardrobe staple.  So when this dark green version went on sale, I couldn't resist snatching it up - it looks just as good with a cable knit sweater & skinny jeans as it does when paired with feminine pieces as I did here.

What I'm wearing:
Zara jacket (similar in greenburgundy, cognac & black), Gap sweater
JOA skirt c/o DailyLook (also in gray or similar here & here), LOFT booties (similar here or here),
Vintage clutch (similar here or here), Ray-Ban wayfarers, Lips: BITE Beauty (Syrah)

New York Minute

Words cannot describe how special & memorable our trip was this weekend.  Watching my kids, wide-eyed with wonder, experience the city for the first time, making new memories together & having my whole family there to support me & cheer me on for the Lupus Walk brought me to tears so many different times.  I'm completely overwhelmed with gratitude & I hope we can make this trip an annual tradition.  Here's a few pictures from our quick visit to NYC:

We spent all of Friday afternoon exploring Central Park as a family - the kids didn't want to leave

The Aviators Drumline greeted us bright & early on Saturday morning and helped kick off the Lupus Walk

All smiles, waiting for the event to begin at the U.S.S. Intrepid

Meeting a PPF reader & fellow Lupus sufferer - without a doubt, the cutest pregnant woman I've ever seen

My daughter snuck away and wrote a sweet note for me on the banner

Proudly marching with the LRI team

Me & my sweet boy - we have a strong bond because he also deals with something every day that he cannot control

I couldn't resist joining in a little impromptu dance party after the walk

Group shot at the end of the day

I am so humbled & honored to be involved with an organization that gives 92 cents of every dollar donated directly to scientists who are working to find a cure.  And I was thrilled to hear that the walk this year raised 1 million dollars for Lupus research!  I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the Lupus Research Institute for including me, embracing me & allowing me the opportunity to help give a face and a voice to this disease that affects so many.
