Sale Hunter

There are so many amazing end-of-year sales happening right now that it's a little overwhelming to even know where to begin.  Because my site is designed to help you save both time & money, I did the work for you & sorted through hundreds of online clearance items to come up with the best deals I could find under $40.  I only chose items that still had all sizes available & I focused on versatile pieces that would be easy to pair with clothing that you already own.  I've broken them up by price point below so there's truly something for everyone!

{You will need to use these codes to receive further discounted prices at the following retailers - J. Crew Factory & Madewell: EXTRA40 // Target: EXTRA10 // J. Crew: STYLE2015 // Banana Republic: BRSALE}.  I'll be taking the rest of the week off to enjoy time with my kids before they head back to school.  I hope everyone has a safe & happy New Year!

It's a Cinch

Because living in NY means wearing multiple layers all winter long, I'm always looking for ways to add some variation to my looks.  One of my favorite ways to change the appearance of outerwear is to simply add a belt on top. It creates a cinched-in shape that's slimming & it gives a whole new look to an oversized coat.  I've done this quite a bit in the past (see examples here, here & here) - if you haven't yet tried it for yourself, here are some styling tips to pulling it off:

1) Make sure the belt hits at your natural waist - it can throw off proportions if it sits too high.
2) Don't over-cinch it.  This can create unflattering "muffin top"-like bulges (never a good look).
2) This technique works best with belts that are at least 1 inch wide or more - skinny belts are better suited for thin knits and cardigans.
3) Use this handy tool to transform a larger size belt to fit you perfectly (or borrow from your significant other's closet & loop the end through - see example below).
4) Thrift & consignment shops are also great places to look for this type of accessory - you can often find affordable real leather styles that have a cool worn-in vintage look to them.

Two Thousand Fourteen

As we near the end of December, I'm taking time to reflect on the last 12 months...and they have certainly been chock-full of unexpected changes.  Without a doubt, this was one of the most challenging years I have faced since starting my blog.  I've dealt with some difficult health problems and I also had to transition from being a stay-at-home mom to a full-time working mom.  I have been stretched beyond what I thought I could bear, but I have learned & grown so much as a result.  And, in spite of all the hardships, it's also been a year rich with blessings: newly-formed friendships, memorable family trips and an even deeper appreciation for my work.  I am so grateful for every single opportunity that has come my way, for the encouragement I've received from all those who visit & read PPF each day and for a husband who loves me (& tolerates me) through the highs and lows.  Thank you for joining me on this journey & for your support of this site - I hope it continues to serve as a helpful resource for style inspiration, practical tips and budget-friendly fashion in the coming year!

Remix & Rewear

I want to say thank you to everyone who shared their input & feedback about what type of outfit posts you'd like to see more of here on PPF.  I truly value your opinion & my goal is to make my site a place that provides value & inspiration to everyone who visits.  I have taken your suggestions to heart and will be making some changes, starting today!  Since the winter weather makes it difficult for us to get pictures taken at all, it's nearly impossible to show two or more ways to wear the same items.  But, since so many of you mentioned that type of format as being the most helpful, I've decided to implement a "Remix & Rewear" section at the bottom of my outfit posts.

I will pull apart the pieces that make up my outfit (in this case, sweater, tee & skirt) and style them into all new looks.  My hope is that even if the combination I'm wearing isn't appealing to you, this will provide more styling ideas that might be better suited to your lifestyle/personal taste.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on this format change & I can't wait to roll out a few more new ideas after the first of the year!  I have decided to take the rest of the week off to enjoy the holidays with my family & take care of my son, who is suffering from a severe case of the flu.  I hope you all have a memorable & Merry Christmas!

Well Red

I recently received an email from a reader requesting for me to feature more casual outfits.  Ironically, I feel like I've shown almost too many sweater + denim looks lately and was afraid I'd been alienating those of you who work in an office & have to dress up each day.  I always want this blog to be a careful balance of things I actually wear in real life & more polished office-ready ideas that help you utilize what you have in your closet.  But reader feedback is the ultimate gauge for me & I definitely want to tailor the content here on PPF so it's appealing to the masses.  That being said, I'd like to hear from all of you in the comments below - would you like to see more work appropriate ensembles or is it more helpful if I feature off-duty weekend looks like this one?  (P.S. This outfit would be even cuter with sneakers - I just couldn't bear the cold ankles!)

What I'm wearing:
c/o Old Navy vest (on sale!), Forever 21 scarf (on sale; also in teal & cobalt),

Small Steps

Remember when I committed to wearing more color this winter?  I'll be the first to admit I have done an exceedingly poor job of following through.  So instead of going all out (like the suggestions in this post), I decided that taking baby steps by mixing two of my favorite colors together was a solid way to start.  This faux fur scarf is such a fun & toasty warm accessory (I also bought it in green) & it's on sale now for less than $17!  I love the luxe look it gives to these casual pieces & the pretty contrast it provides against the pale pink hue.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Old Navy coat, Mango sweater (last seen here; similar under $90, under $45 or under $20),
c/o ChicNova bag (similar under $70 or under $35), c/o Prima Donna ring (similar)

Shine On

I'm taking a break from regularly scheduled programming today to do something I've never done before on PPF - feature my kids!  This won't be a regular occurrence, but I thought it would be fun to give you a glimpse at what they are wearing this season.  I've partnered with Crazy 8 to help promote their new holiday line for boys & girls. They graciously gave us a gift card to shop with in-store and my kids had so much fun picking out their favorite pieces and styling these looks (along with a little guidance from mom).

Crazy 8 was one of the first kids' clothing stores I discovered after we moved to NY and I instantly fell in love with their brand because they have adorable pieces that are priced just right for our family.  I personally don't want to spend a lot on clothes for my kids because they outgrow them so quickly.  I also really appreciate that the cut of their garments is generous, not skimpy, and that they hold up through multiple washes (so important when you have children as active as mine!).

Just like me, these two love to get dressed up - so when given their pick of anything in the store, they wanted to style holiday party looks instead of everyday casual pieces.  Crazy 8 has so many stylish separates that are perfect for mix & matching, which is great because it really lets their unique individual style shine through.  They are also running a photo contest/giveaway for the month of December -  you can share pictures of your kids, describe their personality in one word & use #ShineOnCrazy8 to be entered for the chance to win an $88 gift card (one winner chosen each week; see full details here).  If you don't have kids of your own, any of these pieces would make great holiday gifts for cousins, nieces or nephews (everything you see here is on sale now for less than $20!).

This post is brought to you by Crazy 8.
All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.

Fair Isle Style

The holiday season is finally in full swing, which means lots of shopping, gift wrapping, baking cookies & running errands around town.  If you're like me, you want to be comfortable but still look stylish while getting those to-do items checked off your list.  And nothing beats a fun & festive knit this time of year!  I bought an ivory fair-isle sweater from Old Navy last December and nearly wore it out...so I was thrilled to see that they brought them back again & gave them a modern twist.  Today I'm sharing two ways to wear these cozy sweaters while you're out & about this winter.  I focused on casual pieces that you can wear any day of the week, but they would also be easy to dress up with tailored trousers (for work) or a sequin skirt (for parties).  The best part is that every single Old Navy piece I'm wearing here is on sale now + you can get an extra 30% off your online order using code DASHER!
