Giving Back

One of the best parts about having a long-term relationship with a brand is when they give me the freedom to create the kind of content that I am truly passionate about.  Those of you who read regularly know that I have been partnering with POND'S for the last 6 months to create monthly posts centered around skin care & beauty.  This month I wanted to do something a little different & I am so grateful to POND'S for agreeing to my concept for this post & for generously donating a tremendous amount of product for a great cause.  My long-term goal is to create more posts focused on giving back and helping those in our communities who are in need.

While I was cleaning & organizing my bathroom the other day, I realized the excessive amount of beauty, hair & skin care products I have that I'm not even using.  There were at least a dozen samples I'd received - lotions, lip glosses, shampoo and more that had never been opened.  Honestly, I felt a little ashamed and embarrassed by the surplus & I knew there was a way that I could use these products to bring a little joy to someone, rather than being wasteful by letting them sit on a shelf.  So I did a some research & found that there is a battered women's shelter in my city that houses women & children in emergency situations. After speaking with the director, I learned that there is always a need for these types of products because, in most cases, the women are leaving their homes at a moment's notice and only have time to grab a few essentials to take with them.

I have always believed that every woman deserves to feel beautiful & special, no matter where she comes from or what her circumstances are.  So with POND'S help, I decided to create several gift baskets to donate to this women's shelter.  I sourced the baskets at my local Goodwill for just a few dollars a piece.  Then, in addition to what POND'S sent, I raided my own personal beauty stash and also bought a few extra hair care & beauty items.  I loved getting to add the products to these baskets, knowing that they will bless women who are going through such a difficult time and that it will help them to feel cared for.  My prayer is that these products will offer them hope and restore their sense of dignity & self-esteem.

For confidentiality & safety reasons, we weren't allowed to take pictures at the center or once we were inside.  But being there had such a profound impact on me that I'm confident this won't be the last time I'll be donating to help this cause.  It broke my heart to see the faces of these women & to know what they are going through, especially with Christmas just around the corner.  It truly opened my eyes to the needs all around me & it has challenged me to think about more ways I can begin to give back in my local community & beyond.

As we enter the holiday season, I know many of you are making plans to give to charities or donate to various causes, in addition to what you may already regularly contribute.  This is such a great way to give back that feels more personal than simply writing a check.  Every center is different, but the director I met with said that they are also in need of feminine hygiene items, travel-sized toiletries and stuffed animals, books & toys (many of these women have small children they are bringing with them who end up leaving most of their belongings behind).  If you're a mom, you can get your kids involved in the process (it's a great teaching moment) and if don't yet have kids, you can invite some girlfriends over (or several different couples) for an evening to build the baskets and then deliver them together as a group.  I hope this post will encourage you to look for ways you can be a blessing to others this holiday season!

This post was created in connection with my appointment as Influencer for POND'S.
All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.
All proceeds from this post have been donated to the local women's shelter mentioned above.

Layered Up

It's funny how a change in climate & surroundings can completely transform your style.  I was a layering novice when we lived in Oregon & North Carolina, but when we moved to New York, I was forced to rethink my wardrobe in a whole new way and learn the art of how to layer.  It took me some time, but it now feels second nature to me.  As I mentioned in my September post (here), I love to shop at JCPenney for affordable fashion that works for my everyday life.  They recently launched a new line of clothes by Belle + Sky, which is a collection of on-trend & budget-friendly pieces.  It contains a great selection of dresses, blouses, vests & jeans all under $60.  Today I'm styling up some of my top picks from the collection + a few other JCPenney favorites into easy layered looks.

I shared about this coat on my Facebook page and I couldn't be happier that I scooped it up.  It's a dead ringer for a much more expensive designer version but at a fraction of the price (and the hood is removable).  These jeans have just the right amount of distressing and are so stretchy & comfortable.  I like that the length hits right at my ankle so I don't have to roll them up to wear with my ankle boots.  I wore this exact outfit for a quick weekend trip to NYC with my daughter and it kept me toasty warm while we walked up & down the streets.

What I'm wearing:
c/o a.n.a Coat (wearing Small Petite), c/o Liz Claiborne sweater (wearing a Small),
c/o Joe Fresh Shirt (check your local store), c/o Belle + Sky Skinny Jeans (wearing size 6),
c/o Arizona Travis Boots, c/o BaubleBar Juniper Ear Jackets

Obviously I have an affinity for layering sweaters over button-down shirts.  I like how it changes the proportion of a look and adds a little more interest to neutral basics.  This ribbed pencil skirt is a wardrobe essential because you can dress it up or down and the knit moves with you instead of feeling restricting.  I also picked up this knit dress (probably the most comfortable thing I've ever put on) and this tunic sweater (the perfect length for wearing with leggings & my faux leather pants).

What I'm wearing:
c/o a.n.a Sweater (wearing a Small), c/o Worthington Shirt, c/o Belle + Sky Pencil Skirt
c/o Liz Claiborne Tracy Crossbody Bag, c/o a.n.a Candice Booties, BaubleBar Ear Jackets

Thank you to JCPenney & ShopStyle for kindly sponsoring this post.

Pencils of Promise

I'm honored to be to be sharing with you today about a brand that is committed to giving back & helping those in need around the world.  Soko is a brand that creates beautiful handcrafted jewelry from developing countries & this year they have launched an exclusive holiday collection in partnership with Pencils of Promise. If you haven't heard of them, Pencils of Promise is an organization that increases educational opportunities in countries across the world through school builds & educational programs. The 10-piece collection is handmade by artisans in Kenya using natural & recycled brass. 20% of all revenue from the net sales of this line will be donated to Pencils of Promise to help build schools in Ghana.

This is a cause that's near to my heart because one of my closest friends was born & raised in Ghana - though she & her husband moved to the states to attend medical school, the rest of her family still lives there, including her sister who has two small children.  They had just returned from a visit this summer when we had a chance to reconnect in person (which is rare since they moved to Indiana 4 years ago).  I was saddened to hear the stories she shared with me about what the conditions are like in Ghana and how corrupt their government has become.  There are over 250 million children that lack basic reading & writing skills because they don't have access to regular educational programs.  But, with every piece of Soko x Pencils of Promise jewelry you purchase, you can renew an opportunity for these children.

With the holidays approaching, these pieces would make a beautiful gift because every single item in the line is minimal & wearable enough for everyday.  In addition to what I'm styling here, I'm also crushing on this long necklace & this modern ring.  I personally love being a part of something that helps give back to those in need and I think this collection is the perfect way to shop for some beautiful jewelry that also benefits a worthy cause.  A product in and of itself may not change the world, but it could contribute to build a school that can!  If you're interested in learning more, I've included their video below.

What I'm wearing:
H&M coat (similar), J. Crew Factory sweater, Vila jeans, c/o MIA pumps, ASOS clutch (similar),
c/o Soko x PoP earrings, cuff & ring, Nails: Essie With The Band

In partnership with Soko
The proceeds from this post will be donated to Pencils of Promise

Weekly Top Finds

Some of my favorite things to wear when it gets chilly out are also usually the most expensive things in my closet...which is why I love shopping at LOFT.  They have all of the cozy sweaters and warm layering pieces that I crave, but at a reasonable price + they are almost always having a sale. This week is no exception - many of the items you see here are $25 off & all sale items are an extra 50% off.  Plus, you earn a $25 cash card for every $50 you spend!  Take a look at my top picks below - I personally have my eye on that cozy coatigan.

Thanksgiving Day Style

Since we moved away from our home state of Oregon, I personally find Thanksgiving to be the hardest holiday to celebrate without having family around us.  So, when our friends in Maine began inviting us up to spend Thanksgiving with them, it made the holiday so much more special & it's something we look forward to all year long.  We stay in their house, nestled right on Sebago Lake, which is such a beautiful & picturesque part of the state. They keep things pretty casual, so we typically don't get dressed up for the big meal.  But being that we are their guests & there are lots of pictures being taken, I still want for my whole family to look nice & well put-together.  So today we've styled up some of our favorite Gap Factory sweaters to share with you our Thanksgiving Day style.

My kids are both extremely picky when it comes to knitwear because they find so many styles to be too itchy.  I also don't want to spend a lot on their clothes because they outgrow them so quickly!  We have found Gap Factory to be one of the best places to shop for the whole family.  My son in particular will only wear Gap jeans because he is so tall and their denim has a slimmer cut that works well for his long legs.  This cable-knit color-blocked sweater brings out his boyish charm & I love that it looks so high-end in person.  I went up a size so if he goes through a growth spurt, he'll still be able to wear it this winter and so he can layer a denim shirt or t-shirt underneath for the colder weather.

My daughter is also very tall and has now completely outgrown girl's clothing, which has proved to be a serious challenge as most junior's styles are not modest or appropriate for her age.  Thankfully, we've discovered that she can wear the smallest women's size and it works well for her without being too short or fitted.  As she nears her teenage years, she has become more & more opinionated about clothing, which means she wants pieces that are trendy and stylish.  She loved the graphic pattern of this plaid sweater and thought it would be fun to add a touch of faux fur to give it a dose of glam.

For myself, I like to stick to classic styles for the holidays & I've been on the hunt for a new cable-knit sweater this season.  This one has just the right weight to it & is so cozy & comfortable.  It comes in 6 gorgeous colors, but I was drawn to this rich burgundy hue.  I purposely went up a size so I could layer turtlenecks, tees & shirts underneath it. All of our sweaters are currently on sale (plus an extra 15% off w/ code GFSAVE), so whether you're putting together outfits for a holiday photo session or just looking to stock up for the cold weather, you can get what you need for everyone in the family for less.  Even better, if you sign up for Gap Factory emails, you can get an additional 15% off your purchase!

Tomorrow we're packing up our car & driving to Maine - we cannot wait to enjoy a relaxing week with our friends and to make memories together.  I'll have new posts going up Monday & Tuesday, but will be taking Wednesday - Friday off to celebrate the holiday.  However, I will be posting a comprehensive list of all the Black Friday sales so be sure to check back for details!  You can follow along with our Maine adventures & get a peek at our vacation fun over on Snapchat (ppfgirl).

On me:  c/o Gap Factory sweater (wearing a Small) // Similar shirt // Similar jeans
On her:  c/o Gap Factory sweater (wearing an XS) // Similar snood // Similar jeans
On him:  c/o Gap Factory sweater (wearing a Medium) // Similar jeans

Thank you to Gap Factory for kindly sponsoring this post.

Recent Purchases

Camel Sweater // Drop Earrings // Nude Flats // Fringe Clutch // Suede Pumps // Toggle Cardigan

This was my birthday month so on top of the money I earned from some Poshmark sales, I had some extra spending money.  I bought a mix of good basics (a camel sweater & nude flats, which were on my wish list) and some fun pieces (a fringe clutch & pretty earrings that will transition into the spring).  In addition to the items above, I also took advantage of my LOFT cash during a flash sale and purchased this cardigan sweater & these coated jeans. Here are a few ways I plan on styling my new purchases for the coming months:

Polished Favorites

This post brought to you by Payless
The content and opinions expressed below are that of Penny Pincher Fashion.

My favorite pieces in my closet are polished styles that I can mix & match and dress up & down.  This structured blazer pairs just as well with denim & a basic tee as it does with more sophisticated styles + these velvet joggers from last year were a trendier item that I have gotten far more use out of than I ever thought.  When it comes to versatile footwear, every woman needs a pair of classic black pumps.  But it can be a serious challenge to find some that are both affordable and, most importantly, comfortable.  The cap toe detail on these Payless heels gives them a luxe feel and the modern pointed toe elongates for a flattering silhouette.  Plus, the heel is under 4 inches, which meant I could walk in them all day without having sore feet (read the reviews for further proof!).  And you just can't beat the price - less than $20 for these beauties!  They also come in a gorgeous nude patent, but I opted for classic black, which seems to fit the season better - though at this great value, you could buy them both and still have spent less than you would on a designer pair!

What I'm wearing:
J. Crew blazer (this season's version heresimilar for less), LOFT sweater
Joe Fresh pants (similar herehere or here), c/o Christian Siriano for Payless Hannah Pumps
Zara clutch (similar here or here), c/o Lydell NYC necklaceBaubleBar earrings, Zara ring (similar),
