Layering 101

Without a doubt, the question I get asked the most often during fall & winter is how to layer without looking frumpy. There is definitely an art to mixing & matching pieces in a flattering way that looks effortlessly put together, rather than haphazardly piled-on.  So today I'm sharing two easy ways to achieve this using my favorite pieces from Target.  They are currently offering 20% off your purchase when you spend $75 on clothing, shoes & accessories (plus free shipping on all orders)!  I chose to focus on items I believe to be closet staples that you can wear again on their own or paired with other garments you already have.  I hope this post will help provide some new layering techniques & ideas that you can incorporate into your wardrobe this season!

For this first look, I wanted something casual & relaxed that I could wear while working from home or when I'm out running errands.  I always recommend starting with the thinnest layer on bottom, so I used this tissue striped tee as my base.  Then I added a classic chambray shirt (left unbuttoned) & topped it off with a cozy oversized cardigan. The woven pattern of this sweater is so luxe looking and it's warm enough to use as your outerwear if it's not too cold yet where you live.  When layering with three pieces like this, I like to scrunch up the sleeves of the sweater to let the varying textures & print show through at the cuffs.

I love faux fur vests this time of year because they are so easy to dress up or down.  I decided to give this one a more polished vibe by pairing with a black flared skirt for a night out.  I like that this one has a knit back so it doesn't overwhelm my frame or feel too bulky (it also comes in burgundy & navy).  Target has so many great faux fur options right now - I am loving this cropped black vest & these chic snoods.  I also can't live without a crisp white button-down, which is the ideal base layer for wearing under sweaters, vests & blazers year-round.  To finish off the look, I added some edgy lace-up boots & a sequin clutch that will transition straight into the holidays.  Though I dressed up these layers, you could easily swap out the skirt for skinny jeans to make it weekend-ready.
