Mixed Textures

One of the best ways to tackle dressing for the transition into fall is to wear autumn-appropriate textiles in summer cuts.  For example: this top, while sleeveless, is made from a soft knit that doesn't feel too heavy on 70-degree days, plus it will be great for layering with later on.  And these leather shorts are more versatile than you might think because you can dress them up or down (see more styling ideas below).  I love combining multiple textures like this (knit, leather, suede & calf hair) because it elevates the look & helps the outfit appear more expensive than it really was.

What I'm wearing:
Context sweater (extra 15% off w/ code LTLOVE; also in black & taupe),
Mango shorts (similar under $25under $45, under $50), Dolce Vita flats
Ann Taylor bag, Bracelets: Madewell (similar here or here) & J. Crew (similar),
Sole Society ring (similar), Forever 21 earrings (similar),
Nails: Essie Fiji, Lips: L'Oreal Blushing Berry

Simple Suede

We experienced a significant cool-down in our weather this week (sorry to those of you still in a heat wave!), which gave me the chance to pull out this faux suede coat that I purchased earlier in the month.  It's the ideal topper to wear now because of the cropped sleeves and lightweight but luxe feel - I layered it over a classic silk blouse & paired with my favorite leopard flats for a comfortable but chic casual look.  P.S. This lipstick is the perfect red for fall - you could easily layer a matching gloss over the top for a bit of shine, but I personally love the modern matte finish.

What I'm wearing:
H&M coat, Joe Fresh blouse (similar here or here), c/o Old Navy jeans
Sam Edelman loafers (similar here or here), Warehouse bag, BaubleBar earrings

Post-Workout Skin Care

Over the last few months, I've tried to be much more intentional about keeping up with my workout routine (as mentioned in this post).  And while there are many health benefits to regular exercise, one disadvantage is that excessive perspiration can lead to potential breakouts, because allowing sweat to dry on the skin can actually clog your pores.  I quickly discovered this to be true for myself, so I began washing my face after each workout session to help prevent any skin irritation.  But, after a while, I found that using soap & water three times a day (morning, mid-afternoon & evening) was stripping it of essential moisture & drying out my skin.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Old Navy Graphic Tank (short-sleeved option here), c/o Old Navy Compression Capris

I've talked before about how these POND'S Wet Cleansing Towelettes are my favorite for everyday use & when I travel.  So I decided to try using them mid-day & post-workout to cleanse and hydrate without the need for water. After a couple weeks, I came up with a great system & noticed a huge improvement in my skin!  Now, when I'm getting ready to go to the gym, I simply throw them in my bag with an ice pack - when I'm done working out, the wipes are a refreshing way to cool down & clean my pores after a strenuous workout.  I also keep a stash of towelettes in the fridge for days when I'm exercising at home (I even caught my 11-year-old daughter grabbing one to use after a long bike ride on a particularly hot day).

If you haven't yet given these POND'S Wet Cleansing Towelettes a try, now is the perfect time because POND'S is offering a $1.00 off coupon (print yours here) + they've just launched their Skip The Sink Sweepstakes!  To enter, just follow POND'S on Twitter & tweet @PONDS to share how you'll #SkipTheSink this summer.  The sweepstakes runs through August 31st and 10 randomly-selected winners will receive a $50 AMEX gift card + one package of POND'S Wet Cleansing Towelettes (all the official rules & details here).

Fall Must-Have: The Cape

Images: 1 // 2 // 3

One of my must-have pieces for the coming season is a blanket cape (see how I've previously worn them herehere here).  Sometimes also referred to as a poncho or ruana, these chic wraps are an effortless way to cozy up to the fall weather when it's not quite cool enough yet for a heavy wool coat.  You can layer them over a basic tee with jeans or belt at the waist to accentuate your shape.  Here are my top picks in a range of colors, patterns & price points:

Neutral Fringe

One of my all-time best vintage finds was this tan suede skirt, which I discovered on eBay for less than $30 back in 2012.  I've had it for almost 3 years now and it's one of those pieces that I keep finding new ways to style (see how I wore it in 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015).  So, I was very happy when suede made a comeback in a big way this season because I knew I already had the perfect piece tucked away in my closet.  Since fringe is also a big trend for fall, I decided to pair this new sweater vest with my suede skirt for a modern, neutral transitional look.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Dorothy Perkins Trench (last seen here; similar), Banana Republic Fringe Sweater Vest
Vintage skirt (similar here, here, here or here), c/o Sole Society booties (similar here or here),

Fall Beauty: Metallic Lids

Nearing the end of August means that Fashion Week is just around the corner.  And while most of the shows are designers whose styles I could never afford, there's so much inspiration to be found from the way separates are paired together, to how hair is styled in fresh & modern ways, to the makeup looks that are created backstage.  So, I'm excited to be partnering with Walgreens over the next couple of months to translate two beauty trends from the runways & show you how to make them wearable & affordable for everyday.

One thing that we're seeing a lot of for fall, which happens to be my personal favorite trend, is metallic lids.  This is such a versatile look because it works on everyone, regardless of your skin-tone, and it can be appropriate for day or evening.  Even if you're a novice when it comes to applying eye shadow, this is the perfect way to ease into it because it's literally foolproof using the product I'm sharing below.  And the best part is that all of these products are budget-friendly & available at your local Walgreens!  Here's my step-by-step guide to creating gorgeous gilded lids with a soft pastel pout:

Step 1:  Apply the Eye Crayon across top of lids (stopping just above your crease) & along your lower lash line. Smudge lightly with your finger, if needed, to blend.  This creamy formula is so easy to apply because it blends seamlessly & I was happy to discover that it stayed put all day long.
Step 2:  Use your favorite liner (I prefer dark brown over black) & curl lashes.  Apply 2 coats of Lash Impact Mascara to top & bottom lashes.  This mascara is so voluminous & shiny that I found I only needed one coat for maximum definition.
Step 3:  Using a fluffy brush, apply the Mosaic bronzer to add contour to your face - brush on your forehead around the hairline & in the hollows of cheeks.  I love this bronzer because the multiple shades create a realistic warm glow - so many other products I've tried end up looking too orange on my skin, but this one has a pink undertone that's subtle & flattering.
Step 4:  Apply the Lip Polish Gloss - this pretty pastel pink is the perfect finishing touch to add a sheer wash of color to your lips.

Lips:  Circa Lustrous Shine Lip Polish (Chiffon Glow)
Nails:  Essie Nail Lacquer (Come Here)

Closet Staple: Leopard Flats

Although it's an animal print, I believe leopard to be a classic neutral that will stand the test of time.  I find that it's easiest to work into your wardrobe in the form of shoes & accessories, particularly in the fall.  I've been wearing flats so much more lately - a leopard print version adds a fun accent to even the most basic outfits and, surprisingly, they go with just about everything.  If you haven't already found your perfect pair, I've rounded up the best affordable styles below - whether you prefer a classic ballet flat, loafers or a pointed toe version, there's something here for everyone!

Modern Workwear

If you follow me on Snapchat (ppfgirl), you may have seen me share that this week was one of the best I've experienced in a long time.  Somehow I magically seemed to achieve the perfect work/life balance in the last 5 days and, as a result, I've felt so invigorated.  I attribute much of this to actually dressing for work each day (in all honesty, it's not something I do every single week).  I've found that because I work from home, putting on office-appropriate attire in the morning helps me feel more motivated and focused to get tasks done.  There's so much to be said for how "dressing the part" affects our attitude.  This comfortable pairing is my take on polished modern workwear - the neutral trench vest, printed scarf & suede bag help add interest & break up the nearly monochrome look.  P.S. Right now, Ann Taylor is having their friends & family sale where you can get 40% off everything - I bought this suede bag & these fringe heels, but I'm also eyeing this pretty sweater & these coated jeans.

What I'm wearing:
H&M sleeveless trench (similar under $25, under $50 or under $60), Express knit top (similar),
Forever 21 trousers (similar here, here or here), Vince Camuto Empa flats, H&M scarf
Ann Taylor bag (40% off w/ code FRIENDS40), c/o ShopLately cuff (similar), Forever 21 earrings
Rings: c/o Jeweliq (similar) & c/o ShopLately (similar)

Fall Trends: Accessories

There's nothing I love more than the excitement of transitioning into a new season.  I get giddy with anticipation for the changing weather, new clothing arrivals in stores & the chance to reinvent my outfits by adding creative layers.  One of my favorite things to do at the beginning of the season is to evaluate trends and determine which ones I am drawn to and which fit within my budget.  Changing a few key accessories is one of the easiest & most affordable ways to update your style without breaking the bank.  So today I'm highlighting a few emerging fall trends that will help keep you looking fresh & modern.

How To Style Boyfriend Jeans

As much as I love my skinny jeans, sometimes I just want to wear a more relaxed denim style for its ease & comfortability.  The problem is that I haven't been able to find a pair of boyfriend jeans that fit just right - they were either too baggy through the legs, too slouchy through the hips or too distressed for my personal taste.  So, when Gap Factory offered to let me try their Sexy Boyfriend Jeans & style them into a fall-ready look, I was excited to give them a shot.  And I'm happy to report that I finally found a pair that is both flattering & versatile!

This darker wash means I can wear them with just about anything and the slimmer cut on the leg helps keep them from overwhelming my frame.  If you're on the petite side or just want to create a leaner silhouette, try rolling them up to show off the smallest part of your ankle & pair with pointed pumps to elongate your legs even further.  I also plan to wear these with a structured blazer, striped tee & lace-up oxfords for a tomboy-chic feel.  I've included even more styling ideas below to help get you inspired to give these a try!  All of  Gap Factory's denim is on sale right now, but you can also get an extra 15% off your purchase when you sign up for their emails here.

What I'm wearing:

c/o Gap Factory Boyfriend Jeans (recommend sizing down; also similar here & here)

ONE:  Trench Coat // Long-Sleeve Tee // Boyfriend Jeans // Leopard Flats
TWO:  Cardigan Sweater // Plaid Shirt // Boyfriend Jeans // Pointed Flats
