Two Thousand Fifteen

As I reflect back on where these past 12 months have taken me, I am completely overwhelmed with gratefulness. Though there have been difficulties along the way, there has also been great joy in the journey.  I've made a few mistakes, but I've learned so much through the process and, as a result, I've developed an even clearer vision for the things I want and don't want for myself and this site.  I have several big changes planned for 2016 and I cannot wait to share them with you over the next couple of months, as I strive to grow PPF into a place where all women feel welcome, represented & encouraged to look their best.  I am so thankful to every single one of you for visiting each day - your loyalty & engagement means the world to me + you have richly blessed my family by supporting this site.  Here's to another year of fabulous & affordable fashion!

Layered Denim

To build upon yesterday's post, I decided to follow up today with a collage that shows six different layered looks featuring black denim.  Most of these outfit ideas will also work with any type of black pant you already own (ponte, faux leather, leggings, etc.) or you could swap them out for traditional blue jeans as well.  I'm hoping this will help provide some layering inspiration as well as give you ideas for new ways to style pieces you may currently have in your closet.  And, if you're looking to do some end-of-year shopping, most of the items here are on sale + everything is priced under $75!

Denim Done Right

Believe it or not, I haven't owned a pair of solid black jeans for over a year!  The ones I previously had (last seen here) got ruined in the wash, thanks to my well-meaning & eager-to-help husband.  While I did purchase a coated style this fall, I had yet to find a great fitting regular pair.  So when DENIZEN® from Levi’s® offered to send me one of their new styles to try, I quickly said yes...and I'm so happy that I did.  The Essential Stretch Shaping Modern Skinny in Noir fits true to size, has a good amount of stretch (which makes them so comfortable) & hits at just the right spot on my ankle so I can wear them with flats, heels or ankle boots.

If you're not familiar with the brand, DENIZEN® from Levi’s® jeans are an affordable line of quality denim that is sold exclusively at Target - I appreciate that they are well made & they're all priced under $30!  They challenged me to style them up in a seasonally appropriate look and I actually had a hard time narrowing down my options to just one outfit.  What I love about black jeans is that they are so much easier to dress up & they look more polished than basic blue denim.  For this reason, I decided to combine casual pieces with dressier items for a cozy but chic look. You could easily swap out the heels for black loafers, but I liked the idea of contrasting this buffalo check with leopard print.

DENIZEN® from Levi’s® is currently running an amazing giveaway now through January 3rd - just share your #HolidaysInDENIZEN photo on Instagram for your chance to win your own DENIZEN® from Levi’s® jeans + a $400 shopping spree!  Get some styling inspiration and learn more at denizen.com/holidaysindenizen.

Square Cash

Because both of our families live in Oregon, paying for & shipping gifts gets to be really costly around the holidays. And we don't just have Christmas presents to deal with because we also have six December birthdays between our two families!  Needless to say, this is a very busy & quite expensive month around our house.  Anything we can do to help simplify the process of buying gifts for family members is always a plus.  So, I was thrilled to be recently introduced to Square Cash.  It's a free app that lets you seamlessly send money in just a few simple steps.  We'd previously been using PayPal but weren't happy with how long the transfers took and that there was a fee associated with it.  Plus, I disliked having to take the extra step to then transfer the money from PayPal to our bank, which delayed things even further.

I took one of my friends out to my favorite cafe to test it out for the first time & it really was just as quick & simple as promised.  If you're using Square Cash as an individual, there are absolutely no fees.  You can send up to $2500 per week & it's done as a direct bank transfer so the funds are available within 24 hours.  It's completely private so no one can see who you are sending money to + it's totally secure.  We had our checkbook stolen several years ago, which has made me very paranoid about keeping our financials protected at all times.  So, just to be safe, I set up my Square Cash account so that the 3-digit security code from the back of my debit card must be entered before sending funds.  The best part is that it's so fast - just download the app, link to your debit card, enter the amount you want to send & the person who you're sending to and it's done!

Here are just a few of the ways we've used it so far:

1) Splitting the bill with a group of friends after a girls night out or Sunday brunch (also great for those of you who work in an office and are dividing the costs of a catered/delivered lunch)

2) Paying for babysitting (there's nothing worse than realizing I don't have enough cash to pay the sitter at the end of the night)

3) Sharing the cost of a more expensive combined gift with family members (especially helpful if your family lives in a different state, as mentioned above)

4) Splitting the cost of concert or event tickets, airfare, hotels or club fees (if you have a roommate, it would also be perfect for dividing up the electrical bill, toiletries, etc.)

I love discovering new ways to make my life a little simpler & this is one of those apps that has really helped our family.  You can download Square Cash for free here and start using it today - I know you'll find it to be as much of a time-saver as I have!

I'll be taking the rest of the week off to enjoy the holidays with my family.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!!

Holiday Beauty

As much as I love a traditional red lip for the holidays, this is the time of year to play around with your makeup & try something a little more unique & special.  If you've been invited to several events this season, it's a great idea to experiment with different looks for each party you're attending.  I always try to coordinate my makeup with the outfit I'm wearing and then style my hair appropriately to complement the look.  Today I'm sharing three simple beauty combinations + a makeup blending technique that will keep your skin glowing all night long!  To make things simple, all of the eye shadows I chose for these looks are from this palette, which I have been using daily since I purchased it back in September - it was a bit of a splurge for me at the time, but I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of it!

It's so important to start with a smooth base when doing your makeup.  I've talked before about how crucial it is to adjust your skincare for the colder dryer weather & I've recently adopted a new trick that is really keeping my skin moisturized throughout the day.  I simply mix together equal parts of the POND'S Dry Skin Cream with my usual foundation (I use Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation).  Not only does this help seal the moisture into my skin, but it also gives a luminous finish to my makeup.  Once I have completed this step, I apply my undereye concealer & set it all with a light dusting of translucent powder.   Here are three festive party looks I created to give you some new ideas to try:

BRONZE EYES + CORAL LIPS

ZARA Crystal Headband (similar here, here or here)

HOW TO:
Apply Radar eyeshadow all over lid & then apply DirtySweet on the inner 1/3 of the eyelid. Trace your lower lash line with the bronze eye crayon and blend, extending just beyond the outer corner in a soft wing shape.  Apply shimmering gold liner to the inner corner of eyes.  Apply one layer of mascara to top & bottom lashes.  Brush on bronzer just underneath your cheekbones to create definition.  Lightly blend liquid highlighter on cheekbones. Finish with a soft coral lipstick.

PRODUCTS USED:

SMOKY EYES + PINK LIPS

BaubleBar Earrings (similar here, here or here)

HOW TO:
Apply Dagger all over your eyelid, stopping just above the crease.  Then apply Slanted to the inner 1/3 of eyelid & Black Market to the outer corners, blending well.  Trace along your upper lash line & inside your lower rim with the black pencil.  Using an angled brush, press Black Market along your lower lash line and soften by smoothing over it gently with your finger.  Curl lashes and apply two coats of mascara.  Using a fluffy brush, apply a light layer of pink blush to the apples of your cheeks & sweeping up towards your cheekbones.  Finish with a soft pink lipcolor.

PRODUCTS USED:
Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette (colors: Slanted, Dagger & Black Market)
BeautyCounter Eye Pencil (Black) // MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara
NARS Blush (Gaiety) // NARS Velvet Lip Pencil (Roman Holiday)

FULL LASHES + BURGUNDY LIPS

HOW TO:
Apply High from your lash line to brow bone.  Using a fine-tip angled brush, use Whiskey to "tightline" along the upper & lower lashes.  Curl your lashes & apply one coat of mascara.  Using tweezers, carefully zip individual lashes into the glue & apply one at a time until you've reached your desired fullness.  Apply another light coat of mascara to blend fake lashes with your natural ones.  Lightly blend the liquid highlighter onto cheekbones, temples inner corner of eyes & cupid's bow.  Finish with a deep burgundy lipstick & a small dab of gloss in the center of your bottom lip.

A Festive Evening

The holidays are upon us and, before I go into full-on vacation mode later this week, I'll be focusing on affordable party style over the next few days to help get you looking festive for the season.  Tomorrow will be all about hair & beauty, but today I'm sharing two different evening looks that are perfect for all your upcoming events.  I've purposely chosen one outfit that is a bit more casual for a laid back get-together with friends and one that is dressed up for a night on the town or New Years' Eve.

The best part is that every single piece from Charming Charlie that I'm wearing here is $45 or less - proof that you don't have to spend a fortune to look chic!  They just launched a special online promotion today - be one of the first 1,000 shoppers to spend $50 online & you'll receive a $10 off coupon!  Simply sign in with your email address & make a $50 purchase on Charming Charlie.  After your order is placed, you will receive an email with a unique $10 off coupon code that's redeemable now through January 31st!

Weekly Top Finds

Sometimes I feel the need to add a little bit of texture to my outfits and, in the wintertime, faux fur is a great way to do that. Because these styles can skew a bit on the trendy side, I try to pair them with items that are more streamlined so the result is simple & chic. Not only does faux fur add a little bit of glamour to your looks, but these fuzzy pieces will also help keep you cozy & warm all day long. Here are a few of my current favorite faux pieces - everything you see here is under $75!

Remixed Neutrals

One of the good things about the colder weather is that it forces me to get more creative with how I layer.  I was looking for another way to wear this long turtleneck tunic that I bought earlier this fall (last seen here), so I decided to play around with proportions by styling it over a knit flared skirt.  I think it creates a nice balance by wearing a modern piece with something more feminine.  To finish the look, I pinned on these pretty vintage-inspired brooches for a little dash of sparkle (a great way to add some glamour to your cozy knits, faux fur scarves or beanies).

What I'm wearing:
LOFT Tunic Sweater (similar here or here), J. Crew Shirt (similar here or here),
1. State Skirt (last seen here; similar here or here), TopShop Heels (similar here or here), Similar Bag
c/o BaubleBar Brooch Set (similar here, here or here), BaubleBar Rings, Similar Earrings
