I ♥ NY

I was lucky enough to grow up in a place that instilled in me a love for the great outdoors.  In Oregon, there are incredible views all around you, with the mountains and the beach both being within driving distance.  As a family, we were always camping, hiking, taking road trips and exploring new places, which gave me a deep appreciation for all that the Pacific Northwest had to offer.  I loved everything about Portland and if you had told me when I was younger that I would end up living in New York, I never would have believed it!

Every state I've lived in has had an impact on my style - my upbringing in Oregon encouraged more casual looks; moving to North Carolina for 3 years brought out my preppy side and being in New York has cultivated a desire for more polished modern ensembles.  Today I'm sharing two casual fall looks as part of a new Old Navy campaign - their goal is to highlight different styles based on where people live.  It's all about showing how your location has influenced your own personal fashion choices + sharing what makes your state special.  You can view more state styles & submit your own look on social media using #50Styles50States.

When most people think of New York, they instantly think of NYC - but living upstate has opened my eyes to the vast beauty that this amazing state has to offer.  Even though we've only lived here for 5 years, we have completely fallen in love with this area - as much as we miss Oregon, we now consider NY to be our home.  This is truly one of the most breathtaking places in the fall.  There is a window between September and November (before the snow hits) that is pretty much perfect - the leaves change color, the temperature cools and you never want to be indoors.

We love going for hikes to discover different areas - on this particular day, we ventured to Lower Falls which is right in the heart of downtown.  Because we haven't had much rain this summer, the water levels were low enough to allow us to walk right out to the edge of the waterfall.  I've learned that the key to surviving the weather here during the end of the year is with lots of layering.  This striped tunic is a closet staple because it's the perfect length for wearing alone or pairing with a cozy knit on top (it also comes in 2 solid colors).  I love the color of this draped poncho - it's the ideal piece for early fall because it's lightweight & you can add layers as needed (try a plaid scarf on top or a tissue turtleneck underneath).

Another one of my favorite things about living in upstate NY is that the Erie Canal runs through several of the villages in this area & it's just a short distance from our house.  We like to take advantage of the cool fall evenings & go for walks after dinner along the waterfront, get the kids a scoop of ice cream & feed the ducks on the way back. It's such a peaceful & relaxing way to wind down & connect as a family after a busy day.  I've always favored more tailored styles & this outfit is made up of pieces that are classics with a modern twist.  This peacoat has a timeless shape, but the fabric is a super-soft sweater knit, which makes it so warm & cozy.  And these kick-crop jeans are just as comfortable as my usual skinnies, but have an on-trend shape that's flattering & chic - they look great with sneakers or heels too!
