Bundled Up

One of the most frequent questions I get heading into the winter months is how to bundle up while still looking chic.  I completely understand the challenges that come with attempting to achieve a warm yet stylish look and I think it all comes down to proportions.  So, today I'm sharing two new looks that are perfect examples of how to pull off layers in a way that compliments your shape.

A wrap coat like this is an ideal choice for the season because the belted waist instantly creates a flattering silhouette.  I love this style because it also feels a bit dressier than traditional button-front wool coats, which makes it versatile enough to pair with jeans, work attire or evening wear.  Other options to try are this faux-fur coat, this ladylike fit & flare coat or this faux shearling coat (great for those who live somewhere with milder winters).

What I'm wearing:

I've always loved the idea of wearing soft neutrals in the cold weather months - when done right, it looks so luxurious & sophisticated.  This ivory faux fur vest is the epitome of cozy chic - I love that the back has a ribbed knit texture so it doesn't feel overly bulky.  It pairs so nicely with this soft cashmere turtleneck, which is an essential layering piece for the season.  The lightweight feel is ideal for wearing under a blazer or tucked into a skirt with a moto jacket.

What I'm wearing:
c/o 7 For All Mankind Jeans (similar here or here), c/o Sam Edelman Circus Bond Booties (also in black & gray),
c/o Neiman Marcus Citi Faux-Leather Tote (also in black & red), c/o Alexis Bittar Lucite Spear Earrings

Every single piece I'm wearing here was found at Neiman Marcus Last Call - I like shopping their site because I know I'm getting high quality items at a fraction of the retail cost.  Right now, you can get 30% off all women's ready-to-wear, shoes & jewelry and 40% off cold-weather items (thru 11/1).  I also picked up this lace-sleeve sweaterthis feather trim top (perfect for the holidays) and I just added this rose gold watch to my birthday wish list.

Weekly Top Finds

I've been doing lots of online window shopping lately and, as I was browsing different sites this week, I was so impressed with the amazing selection of new arrivals at H&M.  I've been finding more and more great pieces from their store & have been pleasantly surprised that the quality also seems to be improving from what it once was.  They have a nice mix of on-trend styles & more sophisticated classics - I love that the price points actually fit within my budget + you can get free shipping on orders over $40 with code 0040.  Here are some of my current favorites that I've got my eye on:

1) Camel Wool-Blend Coat (also in navy & black) // 2) Black Patent Oxfords
3) Oversized Ribbed Sweater (also in black, grey & beige) // 4) Velvet Lace Skirt
5) Lace-Detail Blouse (also in black) // 6) Suede Hobo Bag (also in black & cognac)

Statement Plaid

I've talked at length before about my love/hate relationship with plaid - as a little girl, I was forced to wear it constantly, which resulted in me swearing it off as an adult.  But, in the past few years, I've come full circle and have a newfound appreciation for this classic print.  Fall is the perfect time of year to embrace checkered patterns and today I'm sharing two looks with you that are highlighting plaid statement pieces that will give a modern update to your wardrobe staples.

When I came across this plaid coat online, I instantly fell in love with it - I could tell by looking at the stock photo that it would be slightly oversized.  Since it wasn't available in an XS, I purchased the Petite Small (even though I'm 5'8") to ensure it wouldn't be too large.  I've done this with outerwear in the past and it usually works quite well. Thankfully, when it arrived, the fit was perfect - I love the swingy shape and the faux leather detail on the pockets. Because the buffalo check pattern makes quite a statement on its own, I kept the rest of my look simple with one pop of color.  I can't say enough good things about this sweater (I got it in 2 colors).  It is so soft & flattering and it's a more subtle way to embrace the ruffle trend without going over-the-top.

What I'm wearing:
c/o KC Collections Plaid Coat (wearing Petite Small),
c/o Stylus Ruffled Sweater (wearing Small; also in gray, navy & stripes),

One of my favorite coats from last year was this same brand from JCPenney (seen here), so I knew I would love this black anorak just as much.  This is a heavier-weight coat that will keep you toasty warm - there's a hidden adjustable drawstring at the waist on the inside so you can cinch it in for a flattering silhouette + the oversized fur-trim hood gives it a luxe feel.  I paired it with this cozy cable-knit sweater, that has a modern cutout detail, and this plaid skirt, which is such a fun piece for the season - it also comes in black/white and would be so cute with knee-high or over-the-knee boots (I'll add black tights underneath when the temperatures drop).

What I'm wearing:
c/o a.n.a Fur-Trim Anorak (wearing Small; also in tall),
c/o Stylus Plaid Skirt (wearing size 4),
c/o Liz Claiborne Casey Satchel

I have had the best luck finding amazing pieces at JCPenney this season (see my previous post here) - I took my daughter on a shopping spree last weekend and we got her stocked up for fall (she begged me for this satin bomber & hasn't taken it off since).  Right now they are having their biggest sale of the season - you can get $10 off $25 with code HURRY39 in stores & online; 25% off any amount or 30% off $100 or more with code BIGSALE (ends 10/29).  Check out more of my favorites in the scrolling bar below - everything is under $100, including outerwear!

20 Under $20

It always excites me when I can find amazing pieces for less - getting the chance to share them with you here & to know that you're saving money as a result is such a great feeling!  Many of you mentioned that this is your favorite ongoing series and, for that reason, it will always have a place on my site.  For this month, I focused on transitional pieces that will help carry you into the winter/holiday months and I kept things relatively neutral with a few burgundy accents.

On The Go

Athleisure is one of those fashion trends that has lasted much longer than everyone expected...in fact, I think it's safe to say that it's here to stay.  And, in my mind, it makes perfect sense - because we all want to be comfortable! As much as I love wearing polished styles, when I'm on "mom duty" (running errands, doing school pick-up and heading to football & swim), this is the type of outfit that I typically reach for.  On those days, I take 10 minutes to apply minimal makeup (usually just CC cream, a little blush & lip gloss) and then I throw my hair up in a ponytail & I'm out the door.

I bought these shoes & this vest at completely different times and only later realized that they perfectly matched.  I've been wearing them both to the gym - the vest is so nice for throwing on over my workout clothes for a light layer of warmth or with casual pieces when we're heading out on a family hike.  The hood is removable & it comes in 14 different colors - get an extra 20% off with code SAVINGS20.  And if you're in the market for new athletic shoes, these are amazing - NIKE's are notorious for running narrow & this style is no exception, so I recommend going 1/2 size up (I've also included the link to a more affordable look-alike below).

What I'm wearing:
TekGear Hooded Vest (similar coat here), Forever 21 Shirt (similar here or here),
c/o Old Navy Jeans (similar here or here), NIKE Sneakers (similar for less here),
c/o Old Navy Backpack (similar), Forever 21 Watch (similar)

Birthday Wishes

As much as I hate to admit it, I'll be turning another year older in a few short weeks.  To be honest, I'm not thrilled about inching closer to the big 4-0, but I do feel like I've grown & learned more in this past year than maybe ever before.  Much of that has to do with the amount of trials & challenges we've gone through as a family....and, as strange as it sounds, I honestly wouldn't change a thing because it's made me stronger & more determined to fight for what is most important.  I've also had my healthiest year yet, with little to no Lupus symptoms...which is truly something to celebrate!  I have so much to be thankful for and, while I don't feel there's a lot I truly "need", here are a few of the items on my birthday wish list:

Modern Military

I've always been drawn to classic tailored styles, particularly anything with military-inspired details.  I'd been on the hunt for a coat like this for ages, but all of the versions I was finding were way out of my price range.  If you don't mind spending more, this melton wool coat is so gorgeous in person & one that I almost considered purchasing.  Another affordable approach is to update a coat you already own by switching out the buttons for metal ones - there are dozens affordably priced on Amazon (examples here & here).  My search finally ended when I came across this coat for less than $55 - it's just the right weight for our current weather & the fit is absolutely perfect.  I styled it with easy layers & a menswear-style shoe for a polished but comfortable weekend look.

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 Peacoat (wearing a Small; also in red), Three Dots Sweater (similar here or here),
Treasure & Bond Shirt (similar here or here), Banana Republic Jeans (similar here or here),
Leila Stone Oxfords (similar here or here), Nails: Essie Mink Muffs

Silver Silhouette

I had my daughter at a fairly young age, just a few years after we were married.  My doctor encouraged us to try for a baby after I had a cervical cancer scare, even though we had planned on waiting a couple more years.  It was early on in our marriage & we didn't have a clue what we were doing...but if I was given the chance to go back, I wouldn't change a single thing.  She instantly injected an infectious joy into our lives that we didn't know we were missing. I'm so thankful for the close bond that we share and for the way we've been able to maintain regular & open communication as she goes through adolescence - I still can't believe she'll be 13 this December!

As she gets older, she has started to develop her own sense of style & is constantly wanting to borrow items from my closet. So, I love the idea of having a few special pieces I can pass on to her that are keepsake items she can wear both now & later. Even though fine jewelry is typically seen as an investment, these silver earrings & matching bracelet are both accessibly priced and they add such a fun, whimsical touch to this feminine look.  The dainty design makes them a perfect choice for every day wear and they are pieces that my daughter & I can treasure together for years to come. My other affordable favorites from Tous include this pearl bracelet, these drop earrings & this open ring - all of which would make beautiful gifts for the upcoming holidays.

What I'm wearing:
Romeo & Juliet Couture Top (also similar here or here), Mango Jeans (similar here or here), c/o Nine West Pumps
Similar Bag, c/o Tous Silueta Earrings, c/o Tous Silueta Bracelet (matching necklace here),
Nails: Essie Playing Koi, Lips: Trish McEvoy (Plum Brown)
