Fall Reboot + Giveaway

This post is brought to you in partnership with Shoe Carnival.
All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.

One of my most asked questions in the fall is how to wear ankle boots - many of you have mentioned that you love the versatility of this style shoe, but that you're having a hard time making them work with different pant lengths, dresses & skirts.  So today I'm addressing all your concerns, giving you my top styling tips & sharing two affordable boot styles that I believe to be essentials for the season.  Be sure to keep reading all the way to the bottom to get the details on a great giveaway!

The best way to determine what booties will look best with skirts & dresses is to to pay close attention to where the shaft of the boot hits on your leg.  If it goes up too high, it can make your legs appear stumpy - my rule is that the top of the boot shouldn't be more than two inches above the smallest part of your ankle.  I recommend choosing a lower shaft bootie or, if you find a pair you love that are a bit too tall, you can try wearing slim trouser socks in the same color as your boots to help visually even out proportions.  I personally like to pick a boot with a more pointed toe, which elongates the legs even more.

When I'm shopping for boots, style is obviously an important factor, but they also need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple looks and they have to fit within my budget.  Shoe Carnival is the ideal destination because they have a huge selection of brands & everything is affordably priced, so I know I'll be able to find exactly what I'm looking for without spending a fortune.  I love the mix of materials on these David Aaron black ankle boots + the sturdy block heel makes them so easy to walk around in. Because the shaft is just the right height, these would work just as well with jeans or leggings too.

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 Jacket (similar here or here), Banana Republic Sweater
Who What Wear Lace Top (similar), LOFT Skirt
c/o David Aaron Trust Booties, NastyGal Bag (similar)

When you're wearing ankle boots with pants, you have a couple different options.  You can either choose a cropped pant or jean that won't compete with the height of the boot shaft; you can roll them up (I usually do a skinny double roll) or tuck them in (ideal for leggings or faux leather pants).  As the weather gets cooler, I like to wear thick marled socks with mine because it creates a cozy casual look when you have your jeans rolled up with your socks showing.  These Margarita ankle boots by Coconuts are exactly what my closet has been missing - real suede with a low heel, almond toe shape & unbelievably comfortable (they also come in black & grey).  They'll be perfect for all my casual looks this fall & winter and they're under $65!

What I'm wearing:
LOFT Cardigan (similar here or here), Caslon T-Shirt (similar here or here),
Banana Republic Jeans (similar), c/o Coconuts Margarita Boots
Banana Republic Bag, Forever 21 Necklace (similar)
