Winter Wardrobe Challenge

For those of you joining in my shopping freeze, we've officially made it a full month!  What better way to celebrate than with some festive print-mixing.  Stripes & plaid were made to be worn together this time of year - whether you just add a small dose with a scarf or opt for a bolder pattern mix, you can't go wrong with this classic pairing.  See a few of our favorite examples here & then try it out with pieces you already own or shop some affordable styles below!

Black Military Coat

During a NY winter, it's not uncommon for people to only see your outerwear & not what's underneath (because it rarely gets warm enough to take it off).  So, it's important to have one luxe statement coat that can instantly create a chic pulled-together look, even if it's paired simply with a turtleneck & jeans.  This military coat looks so much more expensive than its price tag suggests and I love that the faux fur collar is removable.  It has a really nice weight to it and, unlike other wool-blend coats I own, it has a soft finish that isn't scratchy.  Note: I found that I actually had to size down in this coat to get a perfect fit - I ended up with a 4 but probably could have gone with a 2 for a more fitted/tailored look.

What I'm wearing:
H&M Coat (on sale!), c/o Liz Claiborne Turtleneck (similar here or here),
Mango Coated Jeans (similar here or here), Mossimo Booties (similar here or here),
Similar Bag, Earrings: BaubleBar (similar) & Anthropologie

Celebrate In Style

I can't believe that we're only two days away from Christmas!  We are finally all settled in at my parent's house in the country and are savoring every minute we get to spend with our families in Oregon.  It's not often that we get the chance to all be together, so we are making the most of each moment & having fun creating special new memories. You can see more behind-the-scenes videos on my Snapchat (ppfgirl).

Today I'm sharing with you two new looks for the biggest holidays of the year - Christmas Day & New Year's Eve.  I'm also highlighting two different outfit ideas for a faux fur coat.  I've been wanting a style like this forever and had ordered a few different options earlier in the season...but everything I tried was either overly bulky, not substantial enough or too cheap-looking.  I was so pleasantly surprised by how versatile this faux fur coat is and how I could seamlessly transition it from day to evening.  It's super soft and has that luxe feel (but affordable price), which is exactly what I've been searching for.

Right now at Kohl's, you can get 15% off any purchase or 20% off when you spend $100 or more using code WREATH + you'll earn $10 in Kohl's cash for every $50 you spend thru December 24th.  They also have a service where you can buy online & get free in-store pickup (see details here) & some select items are even available for free same-day pickup (see options here) - perfect if you're a procrastinator like me & still need a few last-minute gifts!

CHRISTMAS DAY

Especially if you're traveling via car or train to see family, you want to be bundled up in layers that can easily be removed once you arrive.  This reversible blanket scarf lends a festive touch to an otherwise neutral look & can double as a blanket while you're in route. This cabled sweater is a great option because it isn't a super-thick knit, so it's flattering and cozy, which makes it ideal for lounging on the couch all day & opening presents (I went up a size for a more relaxed fit & longer length).  Other styles I tried on & loved include this versatile crewneck & this fair isle sweater, which is the softest thing I have ever worn!

NEW YEAR'S EVE

I don't tend to wear bold colors very often, but if there's ever a night to be a little adventurous, it's New Year's Eve. The ruffle detail on this red dress instantly won me over - it's the perfect mix of modern & classic and is a nice departure from my usual LBD.  I went down a size to get the right fit - the crepe fabric is so beautiful, with just the right amount of stretch, and it's fully lined.  When wearing more form-fitting dresses, I swear by this shapewear, which helps suck everything in & smooth out any lumps.  Because this dress is quite the statement all on its own, I kept my accessories minimal & went with some crystal jewelry, a vintage-inspired bag + bold red lip. Other NYE dresses I'd recommend are this burgundy lace sheath, this velvet fit & flare or this embellished dress.  Depending on your plans for the evening, I also like the idea of wearing separates like a lace-trim camisole & tiered skirt (with a blazer or moto jacket on top).

Winter Wardrobe Challenge

We're already on our third winter wardrobe challenge (see the first two posts here & here) & this week is all about layering.  My absolute favorite way to layer in the winter months is to wear a button-down shirt underneath a sweater.  I have done this dozens of different ways in outfit posts in the past (here, here, here, here, here & here). What I like about it is that it doesn't create too much bulk & it adds a little extra polish to your look.  Plus, button-down shirts are something that we all own, so finding new & interesting ways of styling them will help expand your outfit options.

This layering method works just as well for the office as it does for the weekend - try a silk blouse layered under a sleeveless shift dress, a chambray shirt under your favorite sweater or a plaid shirt worn over a tee with a moto jacket (example here).  I also like the idea of wearing a tissue turtleneck underneath a button-down (as seen in the J. Crew image below).  There are so many ways to incorporate a shirt into your layering  - give it a try & see for yourself!

30 Under $20

I've officially changed the title of this post because I was consistently going over 20 items each month...and December is no exception!  There are still tons of amazing holiday sales happening with many retailers offering free expedited shipping.  I kept the color palette classic & festive and have included items that would make for great last-minute gifts (or treats for yourself).

Today we're heading back to Oregon to spend the next two weeks with our families.  The main reason for our trip is because my mom just had major surgery & I'm going to be her "live-in nurse" while she heals.  Posts here will continue as usual, but I won't be able to update the Sales Alerts page during this time because I'll be focused on helping my mom with her recovery.  I also might be a bit slower to respond to comments & emails during this time, but I will do my best to get back to you as quickly as possible.  Thanks so much for your understanding - I hope you all have a wonderful & memorable holiday!

1) Red Sweater (also in grey, ivory & beige) // 2) Cable-Knit Pom Beanie // 3) Black Bow Satchel
13) White Bow Blouse (also in black) // 14) Black Ruffled Skirt // 15) Black Strappy Heels (also in red)

Love Your Hair

This post is created in partnership with Dove Hair.
All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.

Becoming a mom was one of the greatest blessings in my life...but it's also one of the toughest jobs I've ever been given.  When my daughter was little, I had so much fun dressing her up in pink ruffles & putting satin ribbons in her hair...but I didn't fully understand the weight that my words carried until she was much older (read more here). Over the course of the last few years, we've had more & more discussions about her physical appearance & how she views herself.  In every single conversation, my goal is to instill in her an unshakable confidence so that each time she looks in the mirror, she is proud of the young woman she sees staring back at her.

I'm honored to be partnering with Dove as part of their Love Your Hair Campaign - their mission is to create a conversation with mothers on how & why they should share hair positivity with their daughters.  A Dove Hair study showed that 8 in 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way & another study showed that 82% of girls learn to care about themselves from their mothers.  So I'm encouraging all of you who are mothers, aunts or mentors to girls to tell them why you love their hair & encourage them to embrace it by creating and sharing a custom #LoveYourHair animated message with Dove at LoveYourHair.Dove.com.

Having struggled with my own self-confidence issues as a teenager makes me all the more eager to help her avoid the battles that I fought for so many years.  Earlier this year, I shared my personal hair story (here) and the way my self-esteem was impacted by the messages of what was deemed to be beautiful by society's standards.  My daughter has the exact same hair that I had as a young girl & I've already heard her make statements about how she wishes her strands were thin, straight and more easy to manage.  Each time, I respond by encouraging her that there is absolutely no flaw in the way she was made, that she is uniquely beautiful and that someday she will be thankful for her voluminous mane.

After 13 years of watching my little girl grow up into the mature young woman I see before me today, I have learned a few things & the conclusion I've come to is two-fold:

1) As mothers, our words matter and we should choose them wisely.  We have a unique opportunity to speak truth into our daughters' lives in a way that no one else can.  Even if it seems like they aren't listening or if it feels like what we are saying isn't making a difference...we have to try.  It's been proven that when you repeat positive statements over a period of time, the brain starts assuming the reality of what that phrase affirms.  Which means that by simply reiterating again & again to our girls that they are strong, intelligent & beautiful just the way they are will encourage them to believe that message to their core.

2) Our daughters look up to us & are watching us closely.  They see our disappointment due to a bad hair day, the way we react when our jeans are too tight and the look on our face when we gaze in the mirror.  Every single thing we do is having an impact and setting an example for them.  Either we are showing them that beauty is more than skin deep or we are teaching them to base their self-worth on their appearance.  As sobering as that thought is, it's made me take a hard look at how I am treating myself...because more than likely, it's how she will treat herself. And there's nothing I want more than for her to be confident in who she is, to be proud of how she looks & to know that she is beautiful inside & out.

Holiday Remix

This post is brought to you in partnership with Shoe Carnival.
All opinions are 100% honest & completely my own.

As much as I love getting dressed up for holiday parties & special events, when it comes to my everyday style this time of year, I'm all about keeping warm...which usually means jeans, cozy layers & comfortable shoes.  Whether I'm driving around town running errands, delivering holiday cookies to friends or having a lunch date with my husband, my focus is on creating chic, casual looks that I know I'll feel my best in.  Today I'm sharing two new outfits with you that are great for the weekend & beyond, plus I'm highlighting some amazing deals on my favorite footwear from Shoe Carnival.

When it comes to comfort, sneakers are the reigning champion of shoes, but they aren't always the appropriate choice in the winter months.  But, these Keds shoes are like a hybrid between a sneaker & a boot, which makes them insanely comfortable.  They have a cozy faux fur lining that helps keep feet warm & they're water-resistant, so they're the perfect choice for those rainy/slushy days.  I typically wear the traditional winter boots, but decided I wanted to mix it up this year & try something different.  So many all-weather boots are bulky and awkward - I like that these are easier to move around in & look more stylish with my casual weekend layers.  I wore them on a recent trip to our local tree farm - we weren't able to get a tree this year due to the two-week travel we have planned, but we had fun exploring the property, petting the cows & picking out the prettiest wreath for our front door.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Keds Juliet Boots (also in grey), BCBGeneration Vest (similar),
Warehouse Sweater (similar here or here), Madewell Jeans (similar),
Joe Fresh Gloves (similar), H&M Hat (similar),
Forever 21 Sunglasses (similar), Lips: WinkyLux (Bunny)

Another way to shake up your holiday style is to try something a little unexpected - like wearing your favorite blanket scarf in a different way & styling white denim for the winter.  I've talked before about my preferences when it comes to ankle boots & how hard it can be to find the exact pair you want in the right color, heel height & shape. These booties are real suede with a comfortable block heel & slightly pointed toe that make them endlessly versatile for pairing with jeans or skirts and dresses.  The neutral color means they'll go with everything + you won't believe the amazing low price!  Shoe Carnival has tons of affordable boot styles right now - this lower heel option, which I also own, is a casual favorite of mine & these black ankle boots are a serious steal.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Nine West Keke BootsMapel Boutique Scarf, Treasure & Bond Belt
Mango Sweater (similar here or here), Old Navy Jeans, Old Navy Bag
ASOS WatchHouse of Harlow Earrings (similar), Lips: LipSense (Brick)

Shoe Carnival provided me with product and compensation.
The opinions I have shared about the products are my own.
