Weekend Style

I was having a conversation with a girlfriend the other day about the dichotomies that can exist within someone's personal style.  We both agreed that as much as we love to get dressed up in pretty feminine looks, there's also a big part of us that would easily prefer a pair of comfortable jeans & sneakers most days of the week.  Even though I have a lot of fun showcasing more polished outfits here on the blog, I would never want to give you all the impression that I'm dressed to the nines 24/7, because that simply isn't the case.

When we're spending time together as a family on the weekends, we do a lot of outdoor activities so it's important for me to have a good amount of casual pieces in my closet that I can rotate through.  My daughter just got a new bike last week & I couldn't resist borrowing it for the afternoon...little did I know how difficult it would be to take pictures of me on it!  My husband kept giving me instructions like "go slower" and "ride in a straight line", neither of which could I successfully accomplish - apparently, my biking skills need some work.

I love lightweight pullovers for this time of year because there's often a cool breeze that comes off the water and, once the sun goes down, it can get a little chilly in the evenings.  This neutral striped knit is from a new-to-me site that I just discovered called Vici Collection (not sponsored - just wanted to share!).  I've ordered a few pieces from them (including this dress & this top) and everything has been amazing.  They have regular sales so be sure to either follow them on Instagram or sign up for their emails - they also restock regularly so if an item is sold out in your size, you can sign up to be notified when it becomes available again.  Note: they currently only offer store credit for returns so I recommend selecting items carefully.

June Q&A

1) I just had my son 6 weeks ago and I am struggling to find stylish nursing-friendly pieces that can carry me through the summer months.  I need some functional options, but I still want to look cute!

First of all, congratulations on becoming a mom!  My son was born in the spring & I remember going through the same difficulty of trying to find summer clothes that would allow me to nurse easily.  In particular, I recall having the hardest time with dresses and I almost had to abandon wearing them completely during the year that I nursed him.  Fortunately, there are lots of affordable styles right now that will work for the season of life that you're in - here are some of my top picks:

ROW 1: ONE // TWO (more here & here) // THREE (also in coral) // FOUR (dress version here)
ROW 2:  ONE (also here) // TWO (chambray style here) // THREE // FOUR (another option here)

2) I just accepted a new job where I will be working from home, so I'm in the process of setting up a home office for the first time.  My budget is fairly limited, but I want to create a space that I'll be excited to sit down at each day.

I suggest investing in a comfortable chair - I bought my desk first (this is the exact model I own) and then measured where the seat height needed to be for good ergonomics.  Then I took my tape measure shopping with me so I could ensure I was getting the right size.  And I highly recommend buying a lumbar pillow for additional back support throughout the day.  I set up a gallery on the wall behind my computer but you could also opt for a pretty wreath, decorative mirror, wall clock or larger artwork.  In terms of desktop accessories, I keep mine minimal (because I'm a neat freak) - a small lamp, one framed photo, a scented candle & a little trinket dish for holding my business cards. I also use storage baskets like the one below to hold miscellaneous office supplies like ink cartridges, tape rolls, batteries, etc.  Here are some options to check out:

Dried Wreath // X Slat Desk (different styles here & here) // Fringe Lumbar Pillow (another option here)

3) I am fairly new to the blogging world & just started reading your site a few months ago.  I would love to find other bloggers or Instagram accounts to follow who are moms that have accessible style - can you share some of your favorites?

I'm pretty picky about who I am willing to recommend because I feel a strong sense of responsibility to only direct you to sites/accounts where I know you'll have a positive experience (I'm protective of my readers!).  These are all women who are genuine, kind-hearted and who actually respond to & engage with their followers.  Even if you're not a mom, I can promise you will love these ladies & get loads of inspiration from them.  They are down-to-earth and honest - even though they may post pretty pictures, they also keep it real...that's something that I can appreciate & I know you will too.

Karla Reed - I met Karla a few years back & she is one of the most stylish women I know.  She doesn't have a blog, but she shares her style & product reviews on her Instagram account - she also highlights her daily looks & "real life" mom moments on Instastories.

The Modern Savvy - You all know Alyson is my blogging bestie & I admire her so much - she keeps it real & isn't afraid to speak her mind!  Her site has a great mix of lifestyle content - recipes, home decor, parenting, beauty & fashion.

Sequins & Stripes - Liz recently announced her second pregnancy so if you're also expecting, I'd recommend her site for maternity style inspiration.  Some of the price points might be a little higher than what I normally share here, but her style is very classic & wearable.

Simply x Classic - I've never met Miriam in real life, but I've stalked admired her from afar.  Living in California, her photos are so beautiful & she just launched a new shopping haul/try-on series where she reviews her recent purchases, which is so helpful for online shoppers like me!

Seersucker & Saddles - Beth has an incredible story of love, loss & second chances.  She's a newlywed with two older daughters and a 3rd baby on the way + she's in the process of building a home with her husband.  I've always adored how she puts outfits together & stays in such great shape.

Merrick's Art - Merrick is a mom of all boys & she's a talented seamstress who shares a lot of clothing sewing tutorials on her site.  I appreciate that she features modest fashion that is also really practical for moms.

KBStyled - I've been so inspired by Brooke's honesty about her fitness journey & her healthy approach to diet & exercise.  So, if you're needing some encouragement in that area, definitely give her a follow!  She also has two beautiful children & an amazing sense of style.

Putting Me Together - If you're looking for a blog that is dedicated to cute everyday looks & thorough product reviews, this is it!  Audrey does such a great job of showcasing how to get the most use out of wardrobe staples & sharing different ways to re-wear what you already have in your closet.

M Loves M -  I met Mara in person at a blogging conference several years ago & she is one of the most naturally beautiful people I've ever seen.  It's been fun to follow her journey into motherhood this past year & I love that she shares what she's wearing each day on her Instastories.

White On White

Other than having to avoid red wine & pasta sauce (because I will inevitably spill on myself), I love the idea of an all-white outfit because it's timeless & chic.  The trick to making a monochromatic work look is to add interest by incorporating different textures.  Wearing pieces that are all the same shade allows you to have some fun with your accessories - a few well-placed pops of color are all you need to really make a statement.  Or you could go graphic with your look by adding contrasting black accents and gold hardware (like this woven clutch & these drop earrings) - even better if you finish the look with a bright red lip!

I actually ordered this skirt online for my daughter, but when it arrived & I saw how cute it was in person, I quickly informed her that we would be "closet-sharing" this particular item (one of the benefits of having a teenager).  It also comes in black & navy or two pretty prints + right now it's 40% off with code SUNSHINE, making it less than 15$!

I like that both this top & skirt are fully lined - there's nothing more frustrating than trying on a cute white garment only to find that it's see-through.  I also appreciate how comfortable this combination is - even though it's a more dressed-up outfit, the elastic waist & blousy top mean I can comfortably indulge on date night without worry.  Bring on the dessert!

Bar III Top, Old Navy Skirt, ShoeMint Sandals (similar),
Target Earrings (similar here or here), Mar Y Sol Clutch (similar),

Anthropologie just launched their Summer Tag sale - you can get up to 50% off select styles (prices as marked) - how pretty are these turquoise earrings & this eyelet top?!

Reworked Basics

I've had so much fun partnering with Everlane over the past few months to showcase some of my favorite pieces from their site (see previous posts here, here & here).  What I love about their styles is that everything is so versatile and wearable - all the things I've received from them have been flattering & well-made and these are staples that you can truly wear over and over again.  To prove that point, I decided to re-work some of my top picks to give you some new styling ideas for these classic items.

The last time I wore this striped sweater (here), I styled it in a sophisticated/preppy way.  So I wanted to give it a more modern/casual vibe this time around.  This combination would also be cute paired with white sneakers for the weekend...but honestly, these heels are just as comfortable as flats (I promise!) + they are such a fun vibrant color. If you're on the hunt for more striped summer pieces, check out their new Beach Collection - I already ordered this classic tank & this sweatshirt, which will be perfect for camping!

What I'm wearing:
c/o Everlane Linen Crew Sweater, Vintage Scarf (similar), Joe's Jeans (lighter wash here),
c/o Everlane Day Heel, Forever 21 Bag (similar here or here),
Madewell Earrings (similar), c/o Armani Exchange Watch

When I first featured this tank (here), I gave it a laid-back feel by pairing it with shorts & a denim jacket.  But, because the fabric has a smooth crepe finish, it's ideal for dressing up with more polished pieces.  I also wanted to show it tucked in so you could see how well it works with high-waist bottoms for a more tailored look.  These leather slides are a great affordable dupe for the Hermes Oran Sandals - they're so easy to slip on & go.  They also come in dark brown, black & red - I'd recommend sizing up for a perfect fit.

What I'm wearing:
c/o Everlane High Neck Tank, Ann Taylor Trousers (similar here or here),
c/o Everlane Bridge Sandals, Hat Attack Tote (similar for less here),
Vintage Necklace (similar), Madewell Cuff (similar)

My Monthly Edit

As many of you have noticed, I've been trying to get more creative with styling my hair different ways, instead of just wearing it down all the time.  Thanks to my Lupus being in remission, it's grown in length & volume quite a bit since last year.  For the summer months, I love the idea of using a scarf to work into a chic updo for a classic meets retro look.  Some small square options to try that will also work as neck scarves: here, here, here & here (shop Rebecca Minkoff scarves).

I'm all about a punchy lip color for the season & this moisturizing lipstick is the prettiest raspberry hue - not too bright & it would be flattering on nearly all skin tones.  If you're not a fan of bright pink, there are other shades in this collection that are just as good (In Love with Ginger, Red Alert & Coral Gard are my favorites).

As I've been on a mission to embrace more color, I've noticed a serious lack of yellow in my wardrobe.  I know it can be difficult to pull off, but this eyelet top is a warmer golden hue, which won't wash me out (but would also look great on tan & darker skin tones).   It's currently on sale & ships for free (it also comes in black for a more demure look).  Other eyelet styles that I've got my eye on: this bell-sleeve top, these embroidered shorts, this white skirt, this shift dress & this peplum tee.

Because I have naturally curly hair, I try to give it a break from blow-drying during the warm weather months.  This styling creme is perfect for creating curl separation, definition & shine without weighing hair down.  It has a nice clean scent & a little goes a long way, so I know this tube will last me for a while.  I love it so much that I just ordered more products from this line because they get such great reviews (all paraben, phthalate, sulfate & cruelty-free).

Because my husband & I both work from home, the summers are notoriously difficult for us when it comes to managing the kids' activities and carving out time to interact with them.  We've made a lot of mistakes in this area in the past, so we set out to do things differently this year.  We started by creating a schedule for them that we printed & put on the fridge - this sets clear guidelines for allowable screen time, outdoor play, reading & specific chores...but we also intentionally left room for them to be bored.  This seems like a strange concept, but I've read so many articles lately about the importance of encouraging creativity by creating space for boredom.  This post articulates it well & talks about "minimalist parenting", which is something we are striving for.  Since implementing this, we've already noticed a huge improvement - less arguments between the two of them, more imaginative play & a greater sense of ownership with their household responsibilities.  Side note: this Instagram account is excellent for parenting tips & encouragement.

I've been obsessed with all things cork this season so when I came across these tasseled slides, they went to the top of my wish list.  Based on the reviews, they run small so I'd recommend sizing up - they're currently on sale, but I'm patiently waiting for another price drop before I pull the trigger (these studded sandals by the same brand are equally as cool).  Other cork pieces I love for the season include this watch (similar for less here), this clutch (minaudière option here; tote option here) & these heels (only $25!).

Dressed-Up Denim

Sometimes when we're heading out to a casual family dinner or going to a movie, I know I want to wear jeans, but I also still want to look pulled together.  For those days, I like to have a few tops with interesting details (that work with a regular bra) that I can throw on for a polished but comfortable look.  Today I'm sharing two easy ways to dress up your denim, featuring some tops I picked up recently from Nordstrom Rack (both under $35!).   If you live somewhere that is too hot for jeans, both of these options would work just as well with cut-offs or shorts (like these & these).  I'm also obsessed with these new earrings - they're not too heavy & I love the unique beaded pattern - see more below!

What I'm wearing:
Ro & De Ruffled Lace Top, LOFT Camisole (shop Spanx cami's),
Madewell Jeans (similar here or here),
