Easy Transition

It's hard to believe that today is the last day of January - I don't know about you, but I feel like this month flew by! Even though our weather has been vacillating back & forth between winter storms & spring-like temperatures, I'll be focusing mostly on transitional looks going forward.  Today I'm partnering with Kohl's to share two new outfits - one casual everyday pairing and one that's great for outdoor activities/working out (since many of you have requested more of these).  Every single piece that's featured below is on sale now + you'll get $10 in Kohl's cash for every $50 you spend now through February 5th!

I stuck with soft hues for this first look and chose items that will transition seamlessly into the next season.  This faux suede moto jacket is so buttery soft & the neutral color makes it endlessly versatile - perfect for wearing now over sweaters and in the spring over sleeveless tops & dresses.  I thought letting the ruffled cuff of this sweater peek out was a fun way to add a feminine touch.  I also fell in love with the embroidery detail on these jeans - I like that they are a higher rise and they have a slightly cropped length, which is ideal for wearing with ankle boots & lace-up flats.  Another casual look that I tried on & loved was this crochet cardigan layered over a simple cami with gray denim & strappy metallic flats.

The best part about the snow melting and winter coming to an end is that we get to resume our tradition of weekend strolls down by the canal.  So, I'm always on the hunt for easy-to-throw-on styles that I can wear for our family walks along the waterfront.  I prefer to wear cropped pants for my workouts as the weather begins to warm up and, unlike compression leggings, these capris are made of a soft, stretchy material that would be great for Yoga, Pilates or Barre classes.  What I like most about these pieces are all the smart features they have built into them.  Both the top & pants have discreet zip pockets + the colorblock panels create a flattering & slimming illusion.  This puffy vest might be the warmest one I own - it's both water & wind-resistant and I love the high neck, which is great for those windy days (it also comes in pink, gray & black).

Statement Sleeves

I had posted this casual date night look on my Instagram last month, but just realized that I never featured it on the blog.  So when I saw that these jeans were on sale this week (discount code below), I decided it was the perfect time to share it here!  It's pretty hard to convert me from my beloved Old Navy denim, because they are my tried-and-true favorites, but this pair has worked its way into my regular rotation because they are so stretchy and comfortable.

Ruffles + Leather

Have you ever had one of those days where everything goes wrong?  That's pretty much how my entire week went - my husband had to have oral surgery, I had a bizarre allergic reaction to something (still not sure what caused it) and the weather made it nearly impossible to get outfit pictures.  Just a few minutes after we stepped out to snap these, it started raining...on the bright side, at least it wasn't snow!  Here's to hoping my weekend (& yours) goes much more smoothly.

Even though we weren't able to get as many pictures as I'd hoped, I still wanted to share my outfit of the day with you because this top is one of my current favorites - it's like a comfy t-shirt material, but the ruffle detail makes it look a bit more polished.  I'm also obsessing over this blush bucket bag - metal ring handles are a big trend for spring & this one is such a great price (it also comes in black).

Winter Wardrobe Challenge

Since the athleisure movement isn't going away anytime soon, I think it's a great time to join the club if you haven't already.  This trend is one that's both comfortable & practical, which makes it a win, win!  Because most of us already have a pair of sneakers in our closet, I decided to share a few chic ways to style yours for the season (see some previous looks of mine here & here).  These don't have to be reserved for joggers & denim - try pairing yours with a skirt or dress for a sporty contrast.  Whether you choose a slip-on pair, classic Converse or more athletic style, the possibilities are endless.  I'm currently crushing on this blush faux leather pair (these would also be great for spring) & this neutral textured pair.  See some of my favorite ways to pull off this trend + shop dozens of affordable options below.

On The Run

Nothing gets me more excited about working out than having fresh new gear to get fit in.  I've learned from experience that if I am excited to put on my activewear, that's half the battle - once I'm wearing those pieces, I'll be much more likely to actually complete a workout.  Today I'm sharing with you some of my personal fitness goals for 2017, tips for getting motivated + my favorite workout gear from Old Navy (everything on sale now + an extra 30% off with code ENJOY!).

I am so picky when it comes to my workout pants - it can be difficult to find a pair that fit comfortably, are flattering and won't stretch after wearing & washing them multiple times.  The Old Navy Compression Pants have been my "holy grail" leggings for years - I love a high-waisted style for running because I don't have to worry about them slipping down while I'm moving.  I already have 4 pairs in solid black, so it was fun to branch out with this bright colorblocked style.

Whenever I'm able, I like to transition my exercise to the outdoors - we've had such a mild winter this year so I've taken full advantage of the opportunity.  I personally prefer to wear two lightweight tops together & then I can peel off the outermost layer when I get too warm.  I'm a sucker for pullovers with thumb holes and this bold pink top perfectly matched my running pants.  I layered this open-back tank underneath, which I love because it shows off the fun strappy detail of this sports bra

Right before the holidays, I developed a regular routine at the gym...but unfortunately, after traveling & dealing with a long bout of illness, I was knocked out of my rhythm.  But now that life is finally getting back to normal, I'm picking up where I left off - our Mexico trip is in less than a month, so needless to say, I'm highly motivated!  My fitness motto for the year is "consistency, not perfection".  If you're like me & are just getting back on track, here are a few of my top tips:

1) Pace yourself
You don't want to risk injury by pushing yourself too hard; your body needs time to adapt to a new routine.  Don't get discouraged if you can't do everything you want right away - be patient with yourself & remember that it takes time to build up strength. 

2) Stretch thoroughly
Take a good 10 minutes before and after exercise to stretch - this is crucial to keeping your muscles flexible & ensuring good range of motion in your joints.  If you end up really sore & feeling tight the day after a rigorous workout, try an Epsom Salt bath to ease those aches.  I also swear by BioFreeze for relieving deep muscle pain.

3) Mix it up
Last year I got into a rut of just running & doing Pilates every week.  But, when I found out my favorite Zumba instructor was teaching again after her maternity leave, I decided to sign up for her Saturday classes.  It has challenged my body in a completely different way than the other workouts I was doing & it is by far the most fun way to break a sweat.

4) Feed your muscles
I've started to experiment a bit with intermittent fasting over the last few months & I really love the way I've felt as a result.  Because that means doing fasted cardio three times a week, it's essential for me to refuel my body after strenuous exercise.  I always focus on making that post-workout meal a balanced combination of healthy fats, protein & resistant starch so I will have the energy I need throughout the rest of the day.

This time of year can be a bit tricky because there are so many tempting end-of-winter sales, but most of us have already mentally shifted into spring.  I think it helps to focus on transitional pieces that you can wear both now & later with a few small styling adjustments.  For this month's installment of under $20 finds, I've focused on items that will work for our current season, as well as the next one.

Luxe Neutrals

After the craziness of last week's schedule, it felt so good to take some time to rest & recharge over the last few days. My husband is finally home after nearly non-stop travel for a month & I got the chance to see La La Land, which was the best movie I've gone to in years.  Unbelievably, we had balmy weather again on Saturday & Sunday, so I could get away without having to wear tights (yay!).  

Since I was living in my "mom clothes" and workout gear for several days in a row, I was anxious to dress up a bit for an outing with my husband.  This rich toffee wrap coat is so warm & soft - I actually double checked the label when it arrived because it felt like cashmere!  It adds a sophisticated touch to modern pieces like a speckled sweater & military-inspired booties.  Here are a few ways I'd rework these items into different looks:

* Wear the turtleneck & boots with skinny jeans & a faux fur vest (add a red lip for a pop of color)
* Swap out the skirt for white denim, slip on flat loafers or comfy sneakers and layer the turtleneck under a tan moto jacket (I'm still crushing on this one)
* Wear the white skirt with a tucked-in bow blouse, paired with pointed pumps & a ladylike satchel
* Layer an ivory cable-knit sweater under the wrap coat, add a plaid scarf & pair with burgundy trousers & strappy pumps
