Thank you to Macy’s & ShopStyle for kindly sponsoring this post.
All opinions are 100% honest & all items were hand-selected by me.
I don’t know that I’m the type of person who will ever have a real capsule wardrobe. But, I get questions all the time about what pieces I feel are true wardrobe staples. While this might vary from person to person based on style preferences & lifestyle, I do think there are classics worth investing in that every woman should own.
Today I’ve partnered with Macy’s to share with you some transitional outfit ideas in keeping with this theme. After browsing their site, I came up with 10 key essentials & I’ve styled them all into 3 layered looks for spring. I intentionally selected (mostly) neutral items that you can mix, match & re-wear dozens of different ways – because a versatile closet is something we all want and need!
Right now is a great time to shop because Macy’s is offering 20% off thousands of markdowns through February 24th with code BIG. Read on for all my favorites + the best deals to scoop up while they’re on sale…
Moto Jacket + Knit Scarf + Lightweight Sweater + Neutral Pumps
Though a black moto jacket is one of my most beloved pieces, I like the idea of something in a lighter hue for spring. This is the prettiest neutral and the material is so buttery soft! This would also look great with a pink sweater & white jeans or with this floral print skirt and this camisole. If you’re looking to splurge, this jacket is a great investment. Here are some other styles to check out in blush, white & taupe.
In the early spring when layers are required, one of my favorite combinations is a lightweight scarf with a fine-knit sweater – because it always looks pulled together and it’s ideal for those chillier days. I chose this sweater as one of my staples because it comes in multiple colors, is so cozy + it’s long enough to wear with leggings (though I tucked it in here). More sweaters under $30: here (a great basic), here (that tie detail!), here (the prettiest color for spring) & here (love the white).
I think every woman should own classic neutral pumps. Because I already have some in nude, I selected this tan suede pair because I know they’ll go with everything. These also come in black or blush leather, which are staples too, and they’re under $40 (block heel option here). I have lots of heels in my closet and I can honestly say that these are some of the most comfortable. I also think this white pair looks so chic; I love the studded detail on these and these metallic pumps are under $35!

Classic Trench Coat + Printed Blouse + Skinny Jeans
When it comes to timeless outerwear, a trench coat is at the top of everyone’s list. This structured topper instantly gives polish to casual basics, but pairs just as easily with your tailored workwear & favorite spring dresses. Because I already own a neutral version, I opted for this sleek black style. I always look for something that’s fully lined with a removable hood, which makes it more functional for the NY weather. I personally prefer one that is double-breasted but I’ve included a similar single-breasted option below. Finding a well made trench that’s under $100 can be tricky, but Macy’s has a few in stock that are worth checking out like this & this.
A flattering long sleeve blouse is a must-have for spring & I specifically chose a patterned piece to include in my essentials list. Even if you’re not big on prints, it’s a nice way to break up neutral solids and add some interest to your look. Naturally, I opted for stripes, but a pretty floral like this, this or this would work too (there’s also some great black/white printed tops here & here). I loved the tie detail on these sleeves (also comes in polka dots & solid colors) and think this will transition nicely into summer with black shorts & sandals.
I don’t know why it’s so difficult to find a classic pair of medium wash skinny jeans, but I was pleasantly surprised by these (especially considering that I’ve never worn this brand before). They have a high rise with just the right amount of stretch + the fact that they have no distressing or raw hems makes them endlessly versatile for all seasons/occasions. More jeans under $30: here, here, here & here. Side note: I can’t pull off overalls, but I bought these for my teenage daughter & they are so flattering + such a steal! (size down for a skinnier fit)

Sweater Blazer + Lace-Trim Camisole + Comfortable Flats
This sweater blazer quickly caught my eye because it looks so similar to a much more expensive version I was eyeing. I can’t say enough good things about the quality of this piece – and it’s so versatile! It has slightly more structure than a cardigan, but it’s just as comfortable and is the perfect weight for spring. This runs quite big, so I’d recommend going down 2 sizes if you want a fitted/tailored look or just go down 1 size for a slightly slouchy feel. I’d also wear this over a striped tee with cropped jeans or belted at the waist over this bodysuit.
A classic cami can be dressed up or down & is ideal for layering under everything from cardigans to moto jackets to blazers. I personally love the lace detail on this one, which also comes in black (another option here). But I also recommend this scalloped cami, this lace-up style or this pleated tank.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve become a flats girl lately and I’ve quickly learned that they’re not all created equal. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather spend a little more for a pair that will not only hold up well, but that has good cushioning & won’t result in blisters after several hours on my feet. This brand is one of my absolute favorites because they are so supportive & comfortable. The perforated detail on these mules gives a little added interest to your looks (and provides great breathability) – I love how easy these are to just slip on & go! Other flats to try: these classic loafers (I own & love!), these nude flats, this pointed-toe pair (under $40), these cutout mules & these snake-print slingbacks.
