Ask PPF: My Makeup ~ Part 1

I have been getting alot of comments and questions about how I do my makeup.  And although I have discussed it some in previous posts (here and here), I thought it would be helpful to go into more detail about the actual application.  Because there is so much to cover, I will be breaking this into 2 posts – this first one will be focusing on the face and the next will be about the eyes.

PREP:

Before I get into the breakdown of my steps, I have to say it is incredibly important to treat your skin right from the inside out.  We all know we need to drink lots of water and eat healthy…but I also noticed a marked improvement in my skin when I began regularly taking Triple Omega 3-6-9 (which is also good for your heart).  Secondly, moisturizing is SO critical…especially this time of year when the air is a bit drier & cooler.  I swear by CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion – it was recommended to me by my dermatologist and it is wonderful for keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day.

BASE:

After washing & moisturizing my face, I apply a pea-sized amount of primer.  I let that set for about a minute and then apply my foundation.  I personally like using this sponge for application because it blends better and I seem to use less than with a brush.

CONCEAL & SET:

After my foundation is on, I apply my under-eye cream & concealer to cover any dark spots or reddened skin.  Again, blending is KEY!  Next, I set with translucent powder – instead of brushing it across my face in strokes, I like to dab or pat the powder brush directly on my skin (it sets the makeup better & doesn’t smear your concealer).  Then I apply blush to the apples of my cheeks & sweeping upwards on the cheekbones.

HIGHLIGHT:

The last step is arguably the most important for getting that “lit from within” look and I never skip it.  I put a small dab of highlighter on my finger and apply it in a C shape from the apples of my cheeks, across my cheekbones & up to my temples + a few other strategic places (further instructions outlined here).

I hope this was helpful & answers some of your questions – please let me know if you’re interested in a makeup video tutorial and what you’d like to see!

I always love when bloggers share their makeup tips! Yours definitely always looks impeccable.

The best kept secret I have found for taking care of your skin is from the Beauty Editor Canada blog – cod liver oil. If you google it her blog post will come up. Single best beauty product for your skin is not in fact a beauty product. I swear by it now ๐Ÿ™‚

This is helpful! I stopped wearing concealer a few years ago because it would make me break out. ๐Ÿ™ Now I just use blush, mascara, and chapstick for the most part. I'm finally branching out into the really fun shades of lipstick!

I'd love a makeup tutorial! Maybe you could show a peachy theme (like with the orange Revlon lipstick)? Beautiful photo by the way. Thanks for sharing! ๐Ÿ™‚

To answer your question, after taking the Omega 3-6-9 oil capsules for 3 months, I noticed my skin was clearer & more evenly toned (less redness/splotchiness).

Thanks for sharing your tips! I love makeup too and am a huge believer in skincare first. One question for you – how do you apply your highlighter after your setting powder? I've tried that and find that it's hard to blend after if you use a liquid highlighter (like Benefit High Beam, etc.) because it tends to get dry and weirdly sticky with the powder. Do you use a cream highlighter or have a certain blending technique to avoid that? It makes sense to put highlighter on last, but I can't seem to figure out the best way to do it. Thanks in advance (and love your blog)! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Laura – thanks for your question! I'm not sure why, but I've never had this problem with using the liquid highlighter after my translucent powder. I will say that I don't do the highlighter immediately after my powder. I usually will move on & do my eye makeup and then as a last step, I add the highlighter. Other than that, it could have something to do with the particular powder you're using? If you switch & still have problems, you can always try a powder highlighter instead to avoid this problem. Hope that helps! ๐Ÿ™‚

Great tips! That benefit highlighter is on my list of things to buy because of you! I need to get some MORE supplements. Lol. I'm already on a multi, fish oil and biotin. One more won't hurt, right? ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for your response about the highlighter/powder issue Kimberly! I think I usually do apply highlighter right after powder, so that could be an issue. I've also been using a heavier powder that I don't really love (pressed rather than loose), so you're probably right that the type of powder is causing the problem too. Thanks for the tip! ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd love a video tutorial! I wanted to ask if you've ever applied concealer before foundation? I've talked to a few people who do this but I've always, like you, done it the other way around….?
