Are Faux Leather Leggings Still in Style for 2023?
Short answer, yes! Faux leather leggings continue to be on trend for 2023, they likely will continue to be for years to come.
What makes these pants so popular? The comfort. The style. The endless outfit possibilities. What’s not to love!
As mentioned before, these pants have been featured in several of our seasonal capsule wardrobes. Rest assured, these are definitely a three season pant style!
Faux leather leggings can be (modestly, or not) dressed up for several occasions: work, a night out, special celebration, and more.
My personal favorite is to dress DOWN leather leggings. These are an easy, casual, go-to for evening and weekend attire.
What Tops Can You Wear with Leather Leggings?
Faux leather leggings can look great, very flattering, and stylish plus you’ll feel comfortable while wearing them. For many women, wearing leggings is common but wearing faux leather leggings is a bit of a stretch so they will often shy away from them. If you’re one of them, realize that stepping out of your comfort zone and trying leather leggings might be worth it. I was super hesitant to try the trend myself but will say that I definitely do not regret it.
Being dressier than ordinary leggings, the leather (or faux leather) leggings can make you look effortlessly chic or edgy. However, getting it right highly depends on what top you style faux leather leggings with.
Best Faux Leather Leggings Under $50!
In this post I shared my favorite faux leather leggings under $50! Target has a great option that is back in stock again this season. If you are new to the faux leather legging trend, that is a great trial pair and holds up really well.
When it comes to the best faux leather leggings, Spanx offers the most beloved pair of faux leather leggings. They will cost you though. Average retail is just under $100. These are often included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and Spanx periodic sales, so keep an eye out for savings. I was also able to snag a pair (NWOT) on Poshmark for under $50! I’m wearing the Spanx Faux Leather Leggings in this post.
Best Tops to Wear with Leather Leggings
A Graphic Tee
The combination of a graphic top and faux leather leggings is a modern look I love. Bold, colorful tops are a great option.
My personal style is to pair faux leather leggings with neutral colors. The shirt above is nearly black and pairs well with several other colors. Whatever color you choose, graphic shirts are an excellent compliment to leather(ish) pants!
Oversized Sweater
The top I reach for the most in the Fall and Winter months is my oversized striped sweater from Amazon. I ordered one size up from my normal size and it provides jussst enough coverage when wearing with faux leather leggings. If you need more coverage. Wear a long black tee underneath and you are good to go!
Shacket
A shirt jacket. The perfect mix between shirt & jacket and the ultimate for Fall layering. It is safe to say that pairing leather pants with a neutral shacket is a great look. Especially over a simple fitted t-shirt!
You can also finish the look off with a pair of combat booties to add a little edge to the outfit.
Denim Jacket
A simple addition to any outfit, but pairs particularly well with faux leather leggings! Add a plain white tee and white sneakers for an ultra-casual chic look.
Leather Jacket
Leather on leather… is that ok?? Yes. This will create a super edgy vibe. Perfect for date night or girls night out on the town.
Button Down Top
Another wardrobe staple every woman should have! Whether it is a structured button down or linen-blend from the summer, a simple collared shirt elevates leather leggings instantly.
Long Cardigan
For ultimate coverage and comfort, wear a long cardigan with faux leather leggings. Dress up the look with pumps for the office or dress down with chelsea boots to run errands on the weekend. Either way, this one of the best tops to wear with leather leggings.
Blazer
Not just for the office, we all know a blazer can be worn anytime. Pop it on over a tee shirt and leggings to polish off an otherwise casual look. Or wear it over a nice blouse and pumps for a classic and beautiful outfit.
Sweater Vest
Sweater vests were everywhere last year and will likely be again this year. I love the look of a creamy white sweater vest over a white button up in the fall. Perfect outfit for a dinner date, coffee run, or shopping with friends.
Chambray
Fall would not be complete without a chambray outfit. Pair with cute booties or sneakers for a trip to the pumpkin patch. Also perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon lounging around the house.
Plaid Shirt
Another essential for Fall. Such a fun look for trick or treating or for a friday night football game. Pair with a baseball cap and you’ll have a super cute and easy outfit on the go!
Sweatshirt
A long tunic style sweatshirt or just an oversized sweatshirt is the perfect pairing for a casual leather leggings outfit. Throw on some sneakers and you are good to go! Pair with some layering necklaces & a structured crossbody to complete the look. My Sweatshirt is from Abercrombie and I cannot recommend their fleece enough! So so soft and comfortable! I got this one in the summer and wear it all the time.
A Duster
Duster sweaters hit below the knee, so you will have plenty of coverage when paired with faux leather leggings. You can layer it over nearly any top, such as a pretty lace camisole or fitted tank top.
Long Coat
The ever-popular J.Crew City Coat is the first jacket that comes to mind when I’m looking for a polished, long coat for an outfit. Comes in so many colors and is super flattering. When looking for a long coat to wear with leather leggings, opt for one with structure.
Poncho
Ponchos are perfect because they come in all lengths and styles. Whether you prefer bold prints or modern style, there is likely a poncho out there for you! The best part? It feels like you’re wearing a giant blanket!
Tunics with leather leggings
Tunics are a top that is between the length of a regular top and a mini dress. They provide just enough length to cover your backside, which makes it the perfect top to wear with faux leather leggings.
Tank Top
For the warmer days in faux leather leggings, a tank top is a great option to pair with leather leggings. Opt for a beautiful Fall color and some texture!
Puffer Vest
My favorite puffer vest comes from Abercrombie. I purchased this vegan leather puffer vest last year and love the contrast with black faux leather!
Hi-Lo Shirt with leather leggings
Short in the front, but long in the back. No matter your comfort level or style this is a great top to wear with faux leather leggings. This style top is easy to tuck in the front and leave flowing in the back. Keeping you comfortable and on trend.
Blouse with leather leggings
To dress up faux leather leggings, simply put on a nice blouse to fit the occasion. It can be as short or as long as you like! Pair with strappy sandals in warmer weather or suede ankle boots in cooler temps.
Tops to Avoid with Leather Leggings
There are a few styles I would personally avoid wearing alone with faux leather leggings. There may work when layered up with long jackets or sweaters.
Otherwise, you may want to avoid wearing these tops ALONE with faux leather leggings:
- Crop Tops
- Body Suits
