When I started my site back in 2011, I was focused on finding the most affordable pieces I possibly could so I could still shop & stay within our monthly budget…which usually meant purchasing items that weren’t the best quality and didn’t last in my wardrobe for longer than a year or two. Now that I’m older & I’ve nailed down my personal style, I am trying to be much more thoughtful about quality over quantity.
I’m learning that sticking with mostly classics will give my wardrobe greater longevity. You may have to spend a little more upfront, but over time you will actually save money because you won’t be needing to replace those pieces as quickly. I highly recommend using this cost per wear calculator to help you determine if a purchase makes sense for you (it’s helped me avoid impulse buys when I’m tempted).
So, today I’m practicing what I preach & I’m sharing two fall looks with you featuring timeless staples that you can wear year after year (giving them a lower cost per wear). And the best part is that you can get them for less right now during Macy’s Customer Appreciation Sale – get 25% off with code THANKS now through October 21st. Let’s get into my picks:
This layered look includes some great basics: a cashmere sweater, navy blazer & flat leather boots. Cashmere is always a good investment and this one comes in 19 different colors + it’s under $80 (recommend sizing up). I’m a sucker for anything with military details, so the buttons on this blazer caught my attention. I like that it’s a ponté fabric so it’s stretchy & easy to move around in. Because it’s not a heavy wool blend, you could also wear this in the spring (I’d layer over a striped tee with jeans).
Other outer layers worth checking out: this camel vest, this leopard print cardigan, this jacquard topper & this faux-shearling jacket. And some more affordable sweaters to try: this wrap sweater (just ordered in Dijon), this dolman sleeve sweater (love the green!), this chenille sweater & this marled sweater.
What I’m wearing:
c/o Tommy Hilfiger Ponté Blazer (love this one too), c/o Charter Club Cashmere Sweater (v-neck here),
c/o Cejon Colorblocked Stripe Fringe Scarf, c/o Lucky Brand Bridgette Skinny Jeans,
c/o Tommy Hilfiger Ruthee Ankle Booties
If there’s one thing I have a weakness for this time of year, it’s neutral sweaters – though I have several cable knits, I thought the texture of this one was so interesting & unique (it also comes in navy, burgundy & mustard). When I saw this skirt online, I knew it would be a winner – the color is to die for and the fine whale corduroy makes it even more striking (I’d also wear with a slim black turtleneck tucked in & leopard booties). I found this to run a bit small, so I recommend going up one size from what you normally wear. This would be gorgeous with tall cognac boots (just added these to my birthday wish list).
A few more high-quality pieces I’m currently loving: this faux fur vest, these faux leather pants (bought for myself), these suede booties, this quilted leather bag, these leopard pumps (under $55). See all my Macy’s favorites in the scrolling bar below!
What I’m wearing:
c/o Vince Camuto Popcorn-Stitch Sweater, c/o 1.State Zip-Front Corduroy Skirt,
Similar Boots (here or here), Similar Bag, Nails: Essie Wicked
