In Living Color

I admitted to being stuck in a neutral rut earlier this week…so when Old Navy challenged me to embrace brights this month, I was a little hesitant and unsure about how to make it work for my personal style.  But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only is wearing bold hues an instant mood lifter, but it’s easier to pull off than I initially anticipated.  So, if you’re like me and have a hard time breaking out of your comfort zone, I’m sharing two easy ways you can effortlessly work colors into your wardrobe this season.

Blue has always been one of my favorite shades to wear because it naturally brings out the color of my eyes.  So, this sweater & plaid scarf seemed like the perfect way to inject an unexpected shot of color to my closet.  Because these pieces are bright enough on their own, I tempered the cobalt blue with black trousers & suede pumps.  These pants are like a hybrid of a cropped ankle pant & culottes.  So for those of you who were shying away from culottes due to them overwhelming your frame, these are a must-try because they have a more tailored & flattering fit.  Though I chose to add a sophisticated twist to this look, it would be equally as great with skinny jeans (just picked up this pair) & a classic peacoat for the weekend.

What I’m wearing:

c/o Old Navy Chevron-Stitch Sweater (comes in 5 colors), c/o Old Navy Plaid Scarf,
c/o Old Navy Cropped Trousers (wearing size 4), c/o MIA pumps, Zara bag (similar),
BaubleBar Bracelets (here & similar), c/o InPink rings (here & here),
Nails: Sally Hansen Somber Bliss

For the second look, I decided to try something COMPLETELY different and let my 11-year-old daughter create my outfit.  The only guidelines I gave her were that it needed to be a casual look and that it had to include bright colors (in turn, I agreed to wear & photograph whatever she chose).  Obviously, this is quite a departure from my usual style, but I love her concept of wearing neutral basics (a chambray shirt, white denim & a long cardigan) and adding in pops of color with fun accessories.  It feels much less intimidating this way and you can add just one accent hue or create contrast with several different brights, depending on your comfort level.

What I’m wearing:

c/o Old Navy Long Cardigan, Similar Chambray Shirt,
c/o Old Navy Jeans (this season’s version here), c/o Old Navy Fair Isle Scarf,
c/o Old Navy Trapeze Bag (also in black), c/o Old Navy Beanie,
Joan & David Boots (similar here or here), Similar Sunglasses
