Manicure of the Month

For October, I wanted to use polishes in fall colors and do something that is fun & easy.  While I’ve featured a spotted manicure before (here), this time I decided to try two different colored dots and make them large enough that they actually stand up off the nail, giving it a nice texture.  All the tools you’ll need are shown above – pick 3 polishes of your choice (one will be your base coat and the other two for dots) and 2 round-ended toothpicks (a bobby pin also works great).  Here’s a guide for recreating at home:

Step 1: Paint your base color on your nails and let dry for 10 minutes.  I chose a formula that is opaque enough to cover well with just one coat.

Step 2: Once your base coat is dry, use the rounded end of a toothpick & dip in your first dot color.  Make sure you have enough for it to drop onto the nail, but not so much that it will be dripping off.  Carefully make four large dots scattered across the nail – try to keep the pattern random.  You may need to re-dip into the polish to get a nice rounded shape.  Remember, you want the polka dots to look puffy, not flat.

Step 3: Repeat using the same method in step 2 but using your second dot color and making the size slightly smaller than the first dots, filling in the spaces.  Don’t worry if the sizes of dots aren’t all exactly the same – the variations make it fun!

Step 4: Wait at least 20-30 minutes before adding a clear topcoat.

Products I used
Base coat: Trina Turk for Julep Otte
Polka Dots: Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen Gilded Lily (check your local Target),
Sonia Kashuk Two Cent

I've been able to do a quick and easy dot manicure using a dried up Sharpie marker. I pool a small amount of polish on to paper and dip the marker into it and then make the dot on my nail. Using a regular sized pen helps me control the application better. I absolutely LOVE your color combination!
