Because we got married young & started our family right away, most of my peer group has children who are much younger than my own & many of my friends are still growing their families. As my daughter has entered adolescence, it’s felt a bit isolating at times because I don’t have any close friends who are dealing with the same joys, heartaches & challenges that come with raising a teenager. This blog post hit the nail on the head and was just the encouragement I needed – if you’re also a mom to a middle-schooler, I hope this reassures you that you’re not alone. And if you’re enjoying the baby/toddler phase & you have a girlfriend with older kids, I hope this provides some perspective.
CRAVING
This top combines some of my favorite things (stripes & an off-the-shoulder style) – I can see myself wearing it all season long with my favorite denim & a bold red lip. It also comes in a dress version, which is equally as cute, or there’s a more affordable style without the bows here. I’m loving so many of the new arrivals at J. Crew, including this ruffled top, this eyelet dress & this blush bag.
In addition to some jewelry, my husband’s gift to me for Valentine’s Day was a subscription to GreenChef, which is a meal delivery service. I’d previously heard of BlueApron, HelloFresh & a few other similar programs but what I love about this one is that all the ingredients are certified organic & I was able to select a meal plan that is 100% paleo & gluten-free (they also have vegetarian & vegan options). Every Friday, we get a box with everything we need for 3 meals, including spices, produce, meats & seafood, along with detailed instructions for how to prepare them. So far, every meal has been incredible & I like that it’s given me new combination ideas that I can recreate on my own.
WEARING
I’m not one to wear a lot of bold hues, but I do appreciate a well-placed pop of color & red is usually my weapon of choice. These woven macrame flats are so comfortable & chic and they’re the ideal accent for all my neutral separates (though they also come in nude & black). I’ll be wearing mine with white jeans & a classic trench for a Parisian-inspired vibe. Other colorful shoes to try are these scalloped flats, these pointed loafers or these leather flats. Sizing note: I found that these ran small, so I recommend going up 1/2 a size from what you normally wear.
LOVING
When we were in Mexico, my number 1 priority was making sure that none of us got sunburned. So, before we left for our vacation, I bought this face sunscreen, which I applied each morning before my makeup – not only was it extremely effective, but I love that it has certified organic ingredients, is cruelty-free & made without parabens, phthalates or sulfates. I also bought this spray-on sunscreen for us to use on the rest of our bodies & I’m happy to report that no one got burned, even after hours on the beach & in the water!
When I dug my spring & summer clothes out of storage, I discovered that the straw tote I’ve had for years finally needed to be replaced. So I went on the hunt for one with a classic design, fabric lining & sturdy leather handles. This one turned out to be the winner and, unlike my previous bag, I love that this one has a zippered closure at the top so my essentials won’t come spilling out. Bonus: it’s on sale right now + an extra 20% off with code WKND!
