When I did my huge closet purge a few weeks ago, I found myself asking “is this something I can see myself wearing in 5 years? in 10 years?” Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I’m turning 40 this year, but I ended up getting rid of a lot of pieces that felt a little too youthful & trendy. Not that I still won’t wear distressed denim & graphic tees from time to time, but I really want to start being purposeful about building a wardrobe of age-appropriate garments that will stand the test of time. So today I’m talking abut 3 of my timeless must-have staples and talking about how to style them + sharing dozens of options at all price points!
STRUCTURED BLAZER
This polished topper isn’t just for the office – I love dressing mine down with denim or wearing it as an alternative to a jacket for drinks with the girls. This crepe style is great because it’s fully lined, but still lightweight enough to wear this time of year. I personally think all you need is one linen blazer (for spring & summer), one black tuxedo-style (for more fancy affairs) and one camel wool blazer and/or glen plaid blazer (for fall & winter).
LAYERING CAMISOLE
These are a must-have layering piece because you can wear them in all seasons – in the summer on their own, in the fall/winter under cardigans and in the spring under blazers. My favorites that I own & would recommend are from Abercrombie & Fitch (here, here & here), Express and H&M (here & here). Most of mine are v-neck, so I love the pretty draping of this satin style which gives it a slightly more sophisticated feel.
CLASSIC FLATS
As much as I’m preaching about affordable finds, shoes are the one item I don’t mind splurging on. I think comfortable, well-made pumps, boots and flats are worth the investment because no one wants to have blisters or sore feet at the end of the day. These flats were my birthday gift to myself last year and I haven’t regretted it for a second – they are classic, versatile & flattering so I know I’ll wear them for years to come. I love that they are sort of a hybrid between a flat & a loafer and that they have a little bit of a heel. I’ve included several options in varying styles & colors for you below starting at $20.
