It’s been a long time since I’ve done a fitting room try-on for you and, since we have non-stop rain all week & won’t be able to take outfit photos, I decided this was the perfect time to pop in to Target & check out their new arrivals. Overall, I was pretty impressed with what I found – there were only a handful of items I tried on that didn’t make the cut and they were mainly due to fit issues, not quality.
Of course, halfway through my try-ons, I realized there were smudges all over the mirror I was using – I tried to edit it out as much as I could after the fact, but the perfectionist in me is still bothered by it. Note to self: next time toss cleansing wipes in the car before heading to the store!
These fitting room reviews are meant to provide a service to you so you can see the clothes on a real person & hear more detail about the specific fit and fabrication. I tried to focus on a wide range of clothing that will flatter all body types & suit many different lifestyles. While everything is budget-friendly because it’s all from Target, please don’t feel pressured to buy more than you can afford or purchase items that you don’t need.
1) Printed Wrap Dress + Macrame Bag
Who doesn’t love a wrap dress?! They’re so flattering and they work on every body type without exception! This one is so easy & lightweight (unlined, but not sheer) and great for throwing on when you want to look instantly pulled together without a lot of effort. It is a true wrap style, so it’s nursing-friendly (and it could also work with a small bump if you’re pregnant since the wrap is adjustable). I found this to be true to size, but several of the reviews mentioned that it shrinks in the wash, so you might want to size up to allow for that.
2) Printed Square Neck Top + Denim Shorts
This top reminded me so much of Madewell – love the square neckline & flutter sleeves – it also comes in a cute red plaid that would be perfect for Memorial Day Weekend or 4th of July. I’d size down in this as it is a looser fit. I tried on a bunch of shorts & these were the only ones I was even willing to photograph – ugh! I’m not a big fan of myself in shorts in general, but these denim shorts fit really well. They are a comfortable mid rise with good stretch & minimal distressing, which makes them super versatile. They have a 5″ inseam, which is my preferred length (I’m 5’8″ for reference). These were true to size, but if you want a slouchier boyfriend fit, I’d size up.
3) Square Neck Eyelet Top + Printed Wide Leg Pants
This top is even prettier in person, but I wish it wasn’t such a boxy fit. I knotted it at the waist, which somewhat helped (a front tuck would work too), but you’ll definitely want to size down in this one. You all know I love a wide leg pant & this print is the epitome of summer vibes. These are a mid-rise, but I think you could size down & wear them higher on the waist – they have an elastic waist in the back & side pockets. If you’re on the petite side, you will probably need to get them hemmed (inseam is 30″). If you wanted to create the look of a jumpsuit without wearing one, pair them with this matching tank (I’d throw on this open-knit cardigan & these slide sandals to complete the look).
4) Tie-Shoulder Jumpsuit (also in olive) + Block Heel Sandals
I’m not a big jumpsuit person – mainly for practical reasons, but also because I can never seem to find options that fit my proportions just right. This one was more flattering than most, but it still felt a bit loose in the crotch area. To be fair, they didn’t have my size, so maybe if I sized down, it would have a more flattering fit. I did love this pumpkin brown color, though, and that the tie shoulder straps are adjustable. This would be cute with a fitted tee layered underneath and some block heel mules.
5) Striped Midi Dress + Raffia Belt
This is such a pretty & breezy dress – it’s hard to tell in the photo, but the fabric has a really nice texture to it. It’s very lightweight & unlined, which would make it perfect for those hot summer days. To show you another way to wear it, I added this belt, which is a mix of raffia and faux leather (so it has some good stretch to it). If you’re not a fan of belts, you can click on the dress link to see how it looks without one. I found this dress to run true to size, but if you prefer a looser fit, I’d recommend size up.
6) Denim Dress + Macrame Bag
I loved this dress so much, but I needed to go down two sizes for a perfect fit. I think this would be a great layering piece – wear a striped tee (like this one) underneath or wear a button-down shirt (like this one) on top & knot it at the waist. I also have to mention this bag because I’m holding it in several of these photos – unfortunately, it’s sold out online, but I would check your local store because it is SO GOOD. The quality blew me away and the size is just right to hold all your essentials – it seriously looks like a vintage find and, for this price, it’s a total steal!
7) Asymmetrical Button Dress + Block Heel Sandals
This style of dress is so popular this year so it’s not surprising that Target came out with their own version. This is another lightweight woven fabric that’s unlined (but not sheer) – the straps are adjustable & there’s some smocking through the bodice in the back, which helps to get that fitted look. I probably would have gone a size down in this, but they didn’t have it in store for me to try on.
8) Printed Wrap Top (also in mustard)
If you’re looking for an easy casual top to wear with jeans & shorts, this is a great option. This is a true wrap top, but instead of the inside button & side tie being at the waist, it’s at the hip (at the bottom of the shirt). I think this would be a great option for those of you who don’t like wearing clothes that are really clingy/fitted at the waist. There’s also a hidden snap at the bust so it isn’t too revealing in front (also makes this nursing-friendly!). This ran true to size for me, but if you have wider hips, you might want to size up because there’s no stretch in the band of fabric at the bottom.
9) Striped Knit Tank Dress + Macrame Bag
This is the kind of dress I would wear all the time when my kids were little & I needed to be able to run around after them. It’s a stretchy t-shirt material that’s basically as comfortable as pajamas – not too clingy & not too short. It would be so cute with this denim jacket & these sneakers for the weekend. It also comes in a burgundy stripe (here), three solid colors (here) and a camo print (here).
10) Striped T-Shirt + Denim Shorts
My daughter & I discovered these tees recently and we quickly stocked up for the season. They are very similar in fit & quality to Madewell, but much more affordable. They run true to size and I haven’t had any wash/wear issues with them yet (I used to buy the Mossimo brand and they would mysteriously end up with these tiny holes in them after a while). Right now, you can get 3 for $20 – more striped options here, here & here.
11) Button-Front Dress (also in black) + Macrame Bag
This was probably my favorite dress that I tried on because it fit like a glove & felt like it was made for me. You can remove the tie belt and wear without or add a woven belt of your own instead. The buttons are all functional and there are small slits on the sides of the dress at the bottom so it’s not restricting & easy to move around in. It’s a timeless style & the perfect length – total winner all the way around!
12) Sleeveless Eyelet Top (also in white)
Everyone needs a little eyelet top for summer and this is a classic style that you can wear so many different ways. Tops with this silhouette tend to be boxier, so I always recommend sizing down so your shape isn’t completely lost. This is fully lined in front, but the back is not. I personally didn’t think it was a deal-breaker for me, but I wanted to point it out. The white version is also really pretty & would be great with shorts like these or these.
