What is a Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of wardrobe staples, paired with a few seasonal pieces, that can be interchanged easily to create several unique outfits. A plus size capsule wardrobe is the same concept and it is size inclusive to accommodate a range of body types.
The goal of a capsule wardrobe is to curate a collection of clothing items that can be utilized to plan outfits in advance, using those specific pieces. Use this capsule as a guide to create your very own capsule to match your unique style. You can also shop the exact items from this capsule below!
What Clothing is Included in a Capsule Wardrobe?
From my experience, capsule wardrobe clothing should take into account three characteristics: Quality, color, cohesiveness.
Quality items will withstand the test of time better than cheap items. This allows you to wear an item longer and repurchase or replace less.
The color of every item must coordinate well with all other colors within the capsule. Consider the color and how versatile it is, or not, before purchasing a capsule wardrobe item.
Finally, cohesiveness must be considered. Aside from color, every item must fit well and look good with other items within the capsule. For example, a crop top may not be the best option with low rise pants. In this case, you should consider either a long line top or a higher rise pant instead.
Capsule wardrobes, like this one, include tops, layers, bottoms, dresses, and shoes that can be worn consistently on a day to day basis. These items create a basic outfit. Items should reflect your lifestyle, personal style, climate, and personal needs. See below for what is not included in a capsule wardrobe.
What type of clothes are excluded of a capsule?
Typically clothing classified as outerwear, formalwear, swimwear, and athletic wear are excluded from capsule wardrobes as these are unique items not worn throughout an entire day on a regular basis. These are items (outerwear specifically) that vary greatly based on personal needs.
Where to shop for Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe Basics
The foundation to any capsule wardrobe is knowing where to shop for versatile pieces. You do not need to invest a ton of money into every item. I have found quality pieces on Walmart and Amazon, however from a plus size perspective shopping for basics can be tricky. Fortunately many retailers we LOVE for quality basics are size inclusive, which makes building a plus size capsule wardrobe easier than ever before.
Benefits of a Capsule
Some benefits of a capsule wardrobe I have personally experienced include getting dressed quicker, reduced closet clutter, save money by wearing more of what I own and shopping less, and increased confidence when wearing items I love that also look good. - Walmart: The Terra & Sky collection on Walmart is highly rated and super affordable option for plus size basics. Many of the items featured in this capsule are from the Terra & Sky brand on Walmart.
- Abercrombie: With a limited selection of plus size options, Abercrombie is a must shop for capsule basics. While creating this capsule I noticed bottoms were available in a wider selection of sizes, while tops were more limited in sizing. Still worth checking out as the denim is hard to beat!
- Torrid: With mixed reviews, I was hesitant to include Torrid in this capsule however I did find a couple of nice items. Torrid is an option for exclusively plus size fashion. They have a phenomenal range in sizing I just didn’t find elsewhere while curating this capsule.
- Old Navy: This is another retailer that can be hit or miss with quality, however you will find sizes up to 4x! Old Navy is really good about offering both trendy and classic wardrobe items which is something I look for when curating capsule wardrobes.
- J. Crew: If quality is top priority, do not sleep on J.Crew. Prices are the highest of all retailers I mention here, however these pieces should last you a very long time. I particularly love the gray cardigan featured in this capsule. It is a three seasons item, so you will get so much wear from it!

Tops
Striped Tank
A wardrobe stable for anybody. A simple stripe top can be worn alone or as a base layer with jackets and cardigans.
Black Tank Top
I cannot imagine my own wardrobe a black tank top. There are endless ways to wear it and it goes with nearly anything! Add to cart!
Tan Tank
This neutral tank is another item we can wear countless ways, especially with the items included in this capsule wardrobe.
White T-Shirt
Versatility peaks with a simple white tank top. You will be surprised with how many ways this basic top can be worn.
Gray T-Shirt
Gray is a neutral color I personally love. This deep shade is timeless and so chic. Wear alone or with layers, I highly recommend a neutral (not black or white) top in any capsule wardrobe.
Black Blouse
For days you need to elevate your look, go for a nice black blouse. I love sleeve details on this top from Old Navy. This top would be perfect for date night, girls night out, church, or any other event. Throw it on with a nice skirt or trousers you already have in your closet or wear with bottoms from this capsule!
Graphic T-Shirt
Fair warning, I love this men’s graphic t-shirt. I have included in in several of the seasonal capsule wardrobes I curate. A graphic tee is a must for any casual chic wardrobe.
Layers
White Button Down
A white button down is easy to dress up or down to create an outfit to match several different occasions. I love wearing mine with blue jeans and sneakers for a casual everyday look.
Denim Button Down
This is another item you will see featured regularly in my seasonal capsule wardrobes. It is a casual denim top, yet feels polished with the collar neckline and button down closure.
Beige Cardigan
A three-season must have! This sweater is perfect for cool Summer mornings and nights. This cardigan adds warmth and texture to this capsule and compliments the other colors nicely.
Gray Long Cardigan
Dress it down with leggings or dress it up over a simple black dress. This cardigan is great and is great on it’s own or as a layer. I own a similar version and simply love it!
Bottoms & Dresses
Black Dress
A classic black dress needs no explanation and is a must have for a plus size capsule wardrobe. I love the fitted top and flowy bottom on this one.
Olive Shorts
Olive is a color I would consider a neutral. I usually incorporate olive as a layer or bottom in my capsule wardrobe collections. These shorts will carry well through Spring to early Fall and pair perfectly with other neutral colors.
Denim Shorts
Every wardrobe deserves a great pair of denim shorts. This pair from J.Crew is currently available up to size 37. I love this neutral wash with a raw hem.
Black Denim Pants
Black denim works year round and is essential for casual and elevated outfits. This pair is Abercrombie and comes in a flattering fit. Abercrombie also offers curve love sizing, which adds an extra 2 inches in the hips and helps reduce a gap in the waist.
Classic Blue Jeans
Another item that goes without explanation. Jeans are a timeless wardrobe staple. Linking another pair from Abercrombie, but any pair of blue jeans you feel confident in can be incorporated!
Leggings
Leggings are a must for casual outfits and low key days. However, I love dressing up leggings with a simple pair of flats and cardigan.
Shoes
White Court Sneakers
If you are new here, I won’t gatekeep these sneakers. Long time capsule followers of this blog will tell you that these sneakers are included in every seasonal capsule I curate. I wear these with dresses, jeans, biker shorts, skirts, trousers, and more. These go with nearly any outfit.
Beige Loafers
A neutral and polished shoe makes for an essential addition to any capsule wardrobe. If loafers are not your style, you could add a nude tone flat or sneaker.
Black Flats
I love a black shoe to coordinate with the black pieces in this capsule wardrobe. This knit flat is comfortable and chic!
Brown Sandals
For warmer weather, sandals are a great choice for a capsule wardrobe. Reef sandals are super comfortable and love how these are easy to slide on and off! When the weather turns cold, I usually swap my brown sandals for a nice pair of boots.
