Let’s talk about layering! It’s one of the questions I get asked about the most often during this time of year because I know we all have to endure the colder temperatures & we want to do it in style (without looking like the Michelin Man). Over the course of the last 9 years living in NY, I’ve learned so much about the best ways to layer & I’m sharing all my tips with you today!
My top three priorities when getting dressed in the winter are: 1) to be comfortable, 2) to stay warm, and 3) to flatter my shape. If I can’t achieve all three of these things in an outfit, I know I’m not going to look & feel my best. I usually pick the sweater & jeans I want to wear first and then add layers from there, depending on how cold it is outside.
I think tissue turtlenecks are great for layering, but sometimes you just need something more substantial. This ribbed turtleneck is a slightly thicker knit while still being slim enough to wear underneath other pieces without adding bulk. It was ideal for pairing with this puffer coat, which is such a fun & unique pattern! Other puffers on sale now include this belted coat, this olive green parka, or this houndstooth print jacket. And, if you don’t need the warmth of a puffer where you live, I’d swap it out for this plaid coat instead.
I love wearing white jeans in the winter and this is a great example of an easy way to pair them with contrasting black pieces for a striking look. These hiker boots are so warm & comfy – they also come in brown & white and are under $55! I also love the rich cognac hue of these, which are a similar style (just be sure to go up a size as they run small). I spray all my suede winter boots with this waterproofing spray, and it works like magic to protect them from the elements & keep them looking brand new all season long.

One of my favorite ways to layer in the fall & winter is to wear a button-down shirt underneath a sweater – it’s an easy way to add a bit more interest to your outfit without feeling too heavy. I usually opt for a crisp white oxford to give it a little polish, but you can also use a denim shirt or plaid button-down too. This turtleneck sweater is one of my favorite new sweaters – it’s made of the softest material ever & I like that it’s slightly longer in the back (perfect for pairing with leggings). This comes in 5 different colors & is under $35!
