My dad served in the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. He talks very little about it because of the trauma that took place during that time. But I do know that he was awarded the Bronze Star for acts of heroism during battle and that several of his friends died in the war. He was engaged to my mom when he was first sent overseas and I remember her telling me stories when I was a little girl about how afraid she was that they would never see their wedding day. We are all so thankful that he did return home safely; but the memory of those that he fought alongside & who lost their lives will always be with him.
So today, whether you are throwing a party, having a BBQ with friends or spending time outdoors, let’s not forget the reason we are able to enjoy all these freedoms. And that the people who sacrificed their lives to give us that gift left behind families, wives & children who will never be the same without them. Let’s take a moment today to honor the memory of those who fought with incredible strength, bravery & valor for our country.
