Let’s talk about one of my favorite layering pieces for year round comfort, a shacket! What is a shacket? A shacket is essentially a blend of a shirt and a jacket. In the Midwest of the USA, where we experience all four seasons, the weather can vary greatly within a single day. As a result, I often opt for a shacket as a midweight layering option. Today, I’ll explore various types of shackets and provide several outfit ideas.

Why is it called a shacket?
This functional and trendy clothing item is the perfect combination of a shirt and a jacket. It is called a shacket because it is structured with the look of a shirt but it functions as a jacket with a little bit of weight.
Can Men and Women wear a shacket?
Yes! Shirt jackets originated several centuries ago primarily for the use of military and work attire. Over the last decade, shackets have become a wardrobe staple for both men and women. I personally own several shirt jackets and reach for them often. It is a versatile layering piece to add interest, or warmth, to almost any outfit.
For men’s fashion, a this layering piece is typically constructed of flannel or denim. Women’s shirt jackets can be found in an array of fabrics, from denim to sherpa. Keep reading to explore some of the most popular shackets for women!
Styling Tips
Being such a versatile piece, here are a few style ideas for cold and warm weather shacket outfits.
How to Style a Shacket for Cold Weather
Luckily, shackets tend to run a bit oversized and if they don’t I will size up one for cold weather shackets in order to comfortably layer over bulky tops. A shacket is a must have layering piece in colder months, especially when you need an extra layer but do not want to have to wear a big coat. A shacket provides warmth and style effortlessly.
Wear this over a graphic sweatshirt paired with faux leather leggings and boots for a casual look. To dress up a shacket, try wearing it with dark denim, tall suede boots, and a nice blouse.
How to Style a Shacket for Warm Weather
Find a nice, unlined cotton or denim shirt jacket for warm weather. This is a great grab and go wardrobe item for times where you will be in an air conditioned location during warm weather. I also love a wearing a shacket in early summer mornings or late evenings. This is also great to have for camping or bonfires, just throw on over you base outfit and you’re set!
In warm weather, a lightweight shacket can be worn over a sundress for a dressy occasion. To dress down a shirt jacket, opt for wearing it with a graphic t-shirt, biker shorts, and your favorite sneakers.
Women’s Shacket Types
Denim Shacket
A denim shacket, like this, is very similar to a classic jean jacket, however it is not as heavy as a standard jacket. From my personal experience a shacket has more room and stretch, which I personally prefer over a stiff structured jacket. This Target shirt jacket is my personal favorite and reach for it more than my ride or die jean jacket.
Flannel Shirt Jacket
A must have staple for Fall! I bought this traditional plaid shirt jacket last fall and love the neutral colors. This one transitions well to Winter as well and is long enough to be worn with leggings. I will wear this with leggings, dresses, leather pants, and even dresses with tights and boots. It is so cute!
Sherpa Shacket
Sherpa is a great alternative for Fall if you do not like plaid or prefer a solid design. I personally love both and I have a regular sherpa jacket that I wear all the time. It adds texture and depth to any basic outfit, such as jeans and a white t-shirt! Below is a current sherpa style from Abercrombie that I really like the look of!
Wool Blend Shacket
Wool blend shackets are slightly elevated due to the luxury fabric over other styles. My wool blend shirt jacket is lined, which is nice because wool is often itchy! They come in various lengths and fits. From cropped and boxy to long and relaxed. This is a timeless shacket style that will blend nicely with various clothing styles.
Quilted Shirt Jacket
Quilting is trending and it looks so chic on a shacket, like this. Quilting is essentially a stitching design sewn into the jacket to created a visual pattern on the shirt jacket. I have seen quilting done in waves, diamonds, and squares. The quilting adds feminine flare to an otherwise structured garment.
Cropped Shacket
Cropped shackets come in various patterns, prints, and colors. The bottom hem generally hits at or above the waistline, making it a great option to wear with skirts, dresses, and wide leg pants. This would be a great option as well for warm weather shacket outfits.
Corduroy Shirt Jacket
Corduroy is a soft textured fabric that offers a casual and relaxed vibe. Corduroy is not very thick (if unlined) which makes this style comfortable and easy to layer over thick base items such as sweaters.

Can you wear a shacket in warm weather?
As I stated above, there are times where a shacket is appropriate in warm weather. This is particularly true if it is hot outside but you will be indoors in the AC! If you are anything like me, you tend to freeze in air conditioning during the Summer and appreciate a cute layering piece. A shirt jacket is a must for this! Here are a few warm weather occasions you might consider wearing a jacket:
- Church
- Dinner date indoors
- Movie theater
- An early morning walk
- A trip to the library
- Museum
- A late night bonfire
- Fireworks
- Indoor Arena event (a play, concert, sporting event, etc)
